Missing woman found alive in Alpine County, body of boyfriend found

A woman was found injured in Alpine County after she and her boyfriend car got stuck in the snow for nearly a week. The body of her boyfriend was found nearby. The couple The couple, Roderick Paul Clifton and Paula Lane, was last seen leaving Citrus Heights for Gardnerville, Nev. on Thursday, Nov. 29. They were reported missing by relatives when they didn't answer their cell phones.

Outdoors with Don Q: A few more days left to fish many California waters

This my annual reminder that many California waters will close to fishing on Thursday, November 15.
That’s only a few days from now, so if you want to fish any of them, you better hustle because you are rapidly running out of time.
Those waters will not re-open until the last Saturday in April next year (April 27, 2013), and that is a long, long time to wait to wet your line.
Here is a partial list of some of the nearby waters that will be closing on November 15:

Outdoors with Don Q: Enjoy the fall colors of Hope Valley

It's that time of the year for my reminder to enjoy the spectacular color of the leaves on Quaking aspen trees (Quakies) in Alpine County, Calif.
And, based on our photography trip on Monday, Oct. 8, you had better enjoy that display, as soon as possible, because four of us (Mary Bottoms, Mary Morris, Elaine and I) found the following color conditions:

BLM Closing Campground at Indian Creek Reservoir on Oct. 8

Alpine County's Indian Creek Campground, adjacent to Indian Creek Reservoir, will close for the season at noon on Oct. 8, the Bureau of Land Management Carson City District-Sierra Front Field Office announced.
The campground will be closed through winter, and reopen May 3, 2013.
The east side of Indian Creek Reservoir will still be available for access off the entry road maintained by Alpine County, weather-permitting.

Saturday is Free Fishing Day in California

As I noted earlier this year, one of California’s two Free Fishing Days will be on Sept. 8. The other Free Fishing Day was way back on July 7. You can fish, all day, without a fishing license on Saturday.
You will be able to fish wherever you like in California, without the need for a fishing license.

Alpine County's Heenan Lake opens Friday for fishing

This is a reminder that a special trout fishing season will open on the Friday before Labor Day.
August 31, 2012 is the Opening Day of the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout fishing season at Heenan Lake in nearby Alpine County, Calif.
Each year, that season opens the Friday before Labor Day and closes the last Sunday in October (October 28 this year). If you’re interested and if you would like to enjoy a totally different fishing experience, plan to spend August 31 at that easy-to-get-to location.

Great fishing is being reported throughout Nevada, Northern California, Lake Tahoe and Sierra this summer. Here is this week's fishing report, through July 17, for rivers, lakes and streams in the region.

Topaz Ranch Estates at 4,400 acres; homes destroyed revised at 2, 17 structures burned

Douglas County officials scaled back the number of homes burned in the TRE Fire on Tuesday night to two homes from seven, however, 17 outbuildings were destroyed and the fire burning in south Douglas County at Topaz Ranch Estates has grown to 4,400 acres.
Sgt. Jim Halsey of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office reported the clarification in a news release. The fire continues to move in a northeasterly direction, away from homes in the Topaz Ranch Estates residential area.

Outdoors with Don Q: Experience California Opening Day for Fishing April 28

It’s almost time to have fun in the High Sierras once again.
On Saturday, April 28 the 2012 fishing season will open for all applicable lakes, reservoirs, streams, creeks and rivers in California. The season will then remain open until Thursday, Nov. 15.
If you’re new to the Carson City area, here’s some information that can be useful if you would like to fish on that Opening Day or the entire Opening Weekend:

Don Q Outdoors: Six more days left to fish many California waters

This my annual reminder that many nearby California waters will close to
fishing on November 15…that’s this coming Tuesday.

That’s only six days from now, so if you want to fish any of them, you better
hustle because you are running out of time.

This is my annual reminder for you to enjoy the spectacular displays of the colorful leaves on quaking aspen trees (quakies) at this time of the year.
If you would like to see and/or photograph those colors, here is a list of my top seven, personal favorite locations, all in Alpine County, Calif., in the Woodfords Canyon – Hope Valley – Red Lake areas.
To reach these locations, just drive south from Carson City on a combination of U.S. 395, Nevada S.R. 88 and California S.R. 88.

In this case, locals commonly make the mistake of saying Brunswick Canyon when they are actually talking about Carson River Canyon. I make this mistake, and I see many instances of this also coming out in arrest reports and press releases from the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

Outdoors with Don Q: Free Fishing Day in California on Saturday

CARSON CITY, Nev. — As I noted earlier this year, one of California’s two Free Fishing Days will be over the Labor Day holiday weekend on Saturday, Sept. 3.
The other Free Fishing Day was back on July 2. You can fish, all day, without a fishing license.
You will be able to fish wherever you like in California, without the need for a fishing license. However, you will need to abide by the rules and regulations that govern whatever water(s) you will be fishing.

Visible from Carson City and Carson Valley, a fire continues to burn in Alpine County, Calif., near the Indian Creek Reservoir area. Alpine County has evacuated the Indian Creek Campground, reports Helen Frazier of the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.
While there aren't any homes in the immediate fire area, the campground does have a number of recreation facilities.

Fire Agencies To Adopt Standardized Unit, Personnel and Station Identifiers

Nine fire agencies from four Nevada counties and one California county have agreed to adopt and implement a standardized apparatus and station identification system. Fire agencies from Douglas, Carson City, Lyon, and Storey counties in Nevada, and Alpine County in California, will be implementing the new system starting Oct. 1.

With the Opening Day of the 2011 California fishing season right around the corner on April 30, if you are planning to fish, you need to be aware that you will need to possess one or more of the following to be legal:
— The 2011 non-resident annual fishing license is $116.90, and it is good through Dec. 31, 2011.
— A one-day resident or non-resident license is $14.04.
— A two-day resident or non-resident license is $21.86.
— A 10-day non-resident license is $43.46.

Second-Rod Stamp:
