Two die in crash on Kingsbury Grade, Mound House man dies in Alpine County crash

Two people died in a head-on crash Tuesday night on Kingsbury Grade in Douglas County, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. In a separate deadly crash reported Tuesday, a Mound House man died on State Route 89 near Markleevillle, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Shooting-related wildfires prompt temporary restriction on Carson Ranger District

Due to the risk of wildfires, the Carson Ranger District will be instituting a temporary shooting restriction. This restriction will go into effect on Friday, June 30, and remain in effect until Saturday, Sept. 30 or until conditions change, the U.S. Forest Service announced Thursday.

Firefighters get handle on Topaz, two other fires, Highway 395 reopens

UPDATE 955PM: From Douglas County: The Topaz Fire is in mop up status at the present time. The fire burned 8 acres within the Topaz Subdivision just south of the Topaz Lodge in Southern Douglas County.
Highway 395 was closed during initial fire attack operations. The highway is now open but motorist are urged to proceed with caution through the area. One out building was damaged in the fire and no structures were lost. Approximately 30 to 40 homes were threatened at one time. Volunteer evacuations are still in place.

Warming temperatures prompt Flood Advisory for Carson Valley and surrounding areas

A Small Stream Flood Advisory for snowmelt has been issued by the National Weather Service for low lying ranch land in areas south of Carson City into Carson Valley in Douglas County, Southern Washoe County and Alpine County.

Join us to explore the Carson River Watershed on a two-day bus tour. The Carson Water Subconservancy District is offering a bus tour of the Carson River Watershed from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on June 6 and 7, 2017.

The Carson River Watershed "Get on the Bus" tour will cover a variety of watershed topics and locations from the headwaters in Alpine County, CA to the terminus at the Carson Sink near Fallon.

Mac the Naw: Lots of snow at the higher Sierra lakes, fishing strong where you can get in

Hello fellow anglers. It is hard to believe it is May 2017, especially with most of the higher lakes still with snow on them. Many of our back country lakes won't be accessible until mid to late June and possibly into July.

Mac the Naw: Sierra lakes, rivers and streams brimming ahead of 2017 California trout opener

Hello fellow anglers, we have one week to go to the California opening day of trout fishing season. On April 29, 2017 the lakes and steams in Inyo, Mono and Alpine counties will open for fishing. On a special note, the rivers leading into Lake Tahoe do not open until July 1, 2017.

Douglas County declares State of Emergency in preparation for spring, summer water runoff

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners have declared a State of Emergency in preparation for the potential of flooding associated with spring runoff and for stormy conditions such as this weekend.

Women in History Remembering Project 2017

March is National Women in History Month and the Douglas County Historical Society will be honoring five women for their significant historical contribution to the quality of life in Douglas County. DCHS has reached out to the community asking for nominees that fit this category yearly since 1999.

The history gathered is archived at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in the VanSickle Research Library and with the Women In History Project, Reno.

Hello fellow anglers, Wishing you a warm and a happy holiday fishing season. Although many areas in our local area have closed for the season, we still have plenty of options to keep on fishing. The lakes in the higher altitudes have started to freeze and ice fishing will be upon us soon. I ask anglers to resist the urge to venture out on lakes and ponds until we have at least eight inches of solid ice.

A traffic infraction interdiction operation on Highway 50 West and Golf Club Drive conducted Friday by the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Team and the Tri-County Gang Unit resulted in a number of drug-related arrests, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Fire spreads from Carson River Resort to wild land near Markleeville

UPDATE SUNDAY: The Carson Fire remained at 50 acres Sunday morning, was 40 percent contained with full containment expected by 4 p.m. Sunday, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch.

UPDATE 8PM: The Carson Fire burning southeast of Markleeville remains at 50 acres as of 8 p.m. Saturday and is burning uphill away from structures, according to the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. There are 160 firefighting personnel on this fire.

Smokey haze around Carson from lightning-caused fires

UPDATE 4:15PM: The Sierra Interagency Dispatch Center (SFIDC) in Minden reports the Rock Fire in the Red Rock area north of Reno is now 50 percent contained 1,500 acres.
The voluntary evacuation orders for about 50 residents in the area has been lifted, and those residents are being allowed to return to their homes.
No injuries are reported with this fire.

Fire crews in Douglas County respond to Diamond fire in Alpine County near Markleeville

East Fork Fire Protection District crews in Douglas County were called late afternoon Thursday to a wildfire in the area of Diamond Valley School in Alpine County near Markleeville.

Two Carson City residents die in motorcycle crash near Monitor Pass in Alpine County

Two Carson City residents died in a motorcycle crash Sunday on Highway 89 in Alpine County, authorities said.
The names of the riders are being withheld until family has been notified.

Hello fellow anglers, I want to tell you of a place that has over looked by many for years. Many of us pass by as we journey through Hope Valley in Alpine County. Some may view it as a rest stop at Pickett's Junction. In 2001 the All Access Wildlife path was built in partner by the California Fish and Wildlife, Alpine County and the Friends of Hope Valley. It is located at the junction of Highways 88 and 89 in Hope Valley, Calif.
