The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held Thursday, June 6, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

To be discussed are funding, contract purchases, grants, special event costs, and more.

The weather will be perfect Saturday, June 1 when the magnificent wild horses of Nevada’s Pine Nut Mountains and the dedicated volunteers who oversee them take center stage at a benefit concert presented by multi-talented Nevada singer, songwriter Krista Jenkins.

She has assembled a group of fellow musicians for an evening of intimate, lively entertainment at Valley View Ranch in Gardnerville to raise much-needed funds for non-profit Pine Nut Wild Horse Advocates (PNWHA).

More than 100 people joined NARAL Pro-Choice Nevada (National Abortion Rights Action League) in a rally Tuesday at the Nevada State Legislature to support Senate Bill 179, also called the “Trust Nevada Women Act.” In a time when abortion is being outlawed in several states around the country, Nevada instead went in the opposite direction with SB 179, securing a woman’s right to choose.

Numbers speak volumes: 5,443 survivors, 178,393 nights of safe shelter, 3,640 support groups, 21,840 support group attendees.

These are the ways Advocates to End Domestic Violence has been helping Carson City over the last four decades. This year, Advocates is celebrating its 40th year anniversary, and our community is better because of it.

Carson City Soroptimist will present grant awards to two women, and honor the achievements of local high school seniors, on Wednesday, May 22, noon to 1 p.m. at Glen Eagles. The meeting is open to the public, with prior reservations required.

Advocates to End Domestic Violence and Volunteer Attorneys for Rural Nevadans in Carson City, the Family Support Council in Douglas County, and Community Chest and Community Services Agency in Lyon County are among local agencies awarded fiscal year grants to serve victims of crime, the Nevada Division of Child and Family Services announced Monday.

Along with Sexual Assault Awareness & Child Abuse Prevention Month recognized through April, Wednesday, April 24 is the 20th anniversary of Denim Day.

For 20 years, the organization Peace Over Violence has organized Denim Day, a rape prevention education campaign, during which community members, elected officials, businesses, and students are encouraged to make a social statement with their fashion choices on this day by wearing jeans as a visible means of protest against misconceptions that surround sexual assault.

The Brewery Arts Center, Carson City’s premiere epicenter for the arts since 1975, is hosting the Proscenium Players, Inc’s dramatic reading of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize winning drama, "Doubt: A Parable" by John Patrick Shanley.

According to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, the Sheriff’s Office is applying for a grant in order to fund a victim’s advocate position, a position that used to be under the umbrella of Advocates to End Domestic Violence.

The Carson City Board of Supervisor’s approved the application during their Thursday meeting.

SILVER SPRINGS, Nev. — Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties’ April public meeting is on Thursday, April 11, 9 a.m. at the Silver Springs Community Center, 2945 Fort Churchill Street. This month, the two hour meeting includes a special one-hour presentation on “Domestic Violence and Coordinated Community Response.”

Every year Carson City Republican Women offer a $2000 scholarship to a graduating senior from the greater Carson City, Moundhouse and Dayton areas.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Carson City has gone blue with the Pinwheels for Prevention Campaign, a national event hosted by Carson City’s Advocates to End Domestic Violence, and Prevent Child Abuse Nevada.

On Friday, Carson City residents joined together to plant pinwheels across the Nevada Legislature's lawn, in an effort to raise awareness about preventing child abuse.

“The pinwheel is an uplifting reminder of childhood and the bright futures all children deserve,” a spokesperson for the national event said. “We want to reinforce the notion that healthy child development serves as a foundation for both community and economic development.”

After watching a video in her freshman health class at Carson High School, Emily Tierney, 14, learned that some of the behaviors that may seem normal in a dating relationship could actually be problematic.

Jacksons Food Stores will award $24,481 to the Nevada Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence, which includes their matching funds as part of the Jackson’s Gift of Peace campaign. Jacksons Food Stores operate in Reno, Carson City, Fernley, Fallon and Yerington.

CARSON CITY — A strategic plan to address commercial sexual exploitation of children in Nevada is the culmination of more than two years of effort by a broad cross-section of individuals representing child welfare, juvenile justice, the courts, service providers, advocates and other entities that work to end the commercial sexual exploitation of children in Nevada.

The Champions for the Arts Advocacy Day will be hosting an event focused on arts advocacy, hosted by Cultural Alliance Nevada.

The event will take place at Carson City’s Nevada State Legislature, located at 401 S. Carson Street, from 8 am to 2 pm, Friday March 15.

Hundreds of raucous public education advocates gathered in front of the Legislature in Carson City and the Grant Sawyer Building in Las Vegas on day 15 of the 2019 session to call for increased funding for K-12 education in Nevada.
