Nevada lawmakers will convene on Wednesday morning for the first time since mid-2019 for what is expected to be a painful special session cutting $1.2 billion out of the state’s budget.

As a digital media teacher at Carson High School I asked my students if they wanted to do a year in review video. Nick Baggio, who is an editor for the announcements, and Gianna Johnson, who is an anchor on the daily announcements, jumped right on the project.

In an update Wednesday from Advocates to End Domestic Violence, the organization behind the community's annual summer culinary favorite Taste of Downtown Carson City, the event won't take place on July 18 as volunteers had hoped. However, organizers are working on plans to find a way to make the event happen this year.

The Division of Child and Family Services on Monday announced 62 agencies, including 5 new agencies, will be awarded the annual Victims of Crime Act Assistance Formula Grant funding for the 2021 State Fiscal Year (SFY21) totaling $20 million.

Gov. Steve Sisolak has announced a moratorium on evictions for both residential and commercial tenants for the duration of the state of emergency, providing relief for renters who, in many cases, are facing the first of the month without a job and are under orders to try to stay at home for their own health.

Stimulus Program Information

The coronavirus relief bill passed March 27 by Congress provides payments to individuals who make less than $100,000 a year. The payment total $1,200 for each adult who makes $75,000 or less, plus $500 per child. The payment amounts decrease if you make between $75,000 and $99,000. The income is determined by your latest tax return filed with the IRS. It will use your 2019 taxes if you have filed them already, or your 2018 taxes if you haven't. A 24-year-old Carson City woman was arrested in the 500 block of N Street Thursday morning for two felony child abuse offenses, and two gross misdemeanor offenses for child neglect / endangerment.

According to the report, Jenna Noelle Hix was arrested following a report of two young children screaming for their mother just before 2 a.m. The reporting party stated they were unsure if the mother of the children was home.

The Nevada Housing Rights Coalition has urged local governments to take swift action to protect the health of Nevadans experiencing homelessness in the wake of the COVID-19 epidemic.

The Nevada Northern Regional Behavioral Health Policy Board elected Taylor Allison, executive director of Partnership Douglas County, as their new chair on Feb. 26.

“Our board is comprised of 13 passionate individuals focusing on a common goal,” Allison said. “Together, we can move the needle and help improve the lives of patients and families in Northern Nevada.”

The Carson City Republican Women's Club will hear former U.S. Senator from Nevada Dean Heller at its upcoming luncheon, Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at Casino Fandango in Carson City. Senator Heller will address the current political atmosphere. Social time is 11 a.m. and the meeting will be called to order at 11:30 a.m.

The Douglas County Board of County Commissioners passed a resolution Tuesday stating the County's support for the local wild horses and the Pine Nut Wild Horse Advocates, the Gardnerville community organization working to protect local wild horses.

A Christmas gift of $2,500 was presented Tuesday to Carson City's Advocates to End Domestic Violence by Greater Nevada Credit Union. The donation is to help assist victims of domestic battery in the community.

With activities lining up around the capital city through the weekend, Thursday events around the region include a meeting of the Healthy Communities Coalition in Silver Springs, an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, and a Carson City CASA volunteer information hour and training seminar. Along the music front, CHS Band will host its winter concert at the Carson City Community Center and our own local country music star and Nashville recording artist Art Mulcahy will be at Jimmy G's. The Carson City School District was a point of highlight at the Nevada Association of School Boards annual conference in Reno, the weekend prior to Thanksgiving. The school district and trustees hauled in nearly a quarter of all the awards (4 out of 19) among the 17 districts statewide.

Carson City Court Appointed Special Advocates, also known as CASA, are trained volunteers who represent the best interests of children who have been abused or neglected.

CASA volunteers are appointed by a Judge and serve as the voice of the child in the courtroom. The CASA volunteer helps to ensure that the children are in safe, permanent and thriving environments.

SUNDAY UPDATE: Traffic along College Parkway and Lompa Lane was diverted briefly early Sunday afternoon due to horse herd moving across the roadway. One of the horses was said to be severely injured. Wild horse advocates have been contacted.

Just before noon on Saturday, deputies were alerted one of Carson City’s local wild horse herds were causing a bit of a traffic issue along College Parkway by the Sonic.
