Senator Square: Inaugural 'Week of Respect' a success at Carson High School

Carson High School celebrated its first Week of Respect Oct. 3-7. Students and staff participated in daily activities promoting positive interactions to support a safe and respectful learning environment. Highlights of the week included interactive game stations where students gathered in Senator Square and engaged in board games and brain teasers.

Street Vibes and the Candy Dance are always the endcap to September. Arts and crafts take over the small hamlet of Genoa this weekend; get a jump on your holiday gift list. All the other corners of Northern Nevada are a playground for the thousands of motorcycle riders and enthusiasts here to enjoy the bike rally. Battle Born Harley on Research Way offers a huge party without ever leaving the valley. Those two events are hardly all that Carson City and our neighboring counties have to offer, however. High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents this month a benefit dance party Saturday, September 24 at the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City.

This month, all profits from our dance will be donated to Advocates to End Domestic Violence. Join us for a night of fabulous dancing and help this worthy charity in the process. At 6:30 p.m., special guest instructor, Kelly Lynn Ford will teach a lesson in intermediate West Coast Swing. Social dance is 7:30-10 p.m.

Native and newcomers is a club dedicated to serve our community by using our time and talents to raise money to give such things as Scholarships to local schools, meals on wheels, monetary gifts to Camp TLC to help terminal ill children enjoy summer camp experience away from hospital.

Carson City memorializes Deputy Howell, fallen capital city officers with permanent wreath

A brief ceremony was held Monday at the Carson City Sheriff's Office building to honor Deputy Carl Howell who died in the line of duty while responding to a domestic violence call a year ago on this date, August 15, 2015.

The ceremony was attended by Howell's family members, sheriff's office staff and personnel, the Carson City Fire Department and city leaders.

Red's takes best overall at Taste of Downtown

Results of the 2016 Taste of Downtown Carson City fundraiser for Advocates to End Domestic Violence (AEDV) are in, and Red's Old 395 Grill on South Carson Street claimed the Best Overall award out of the nearly 40 restaurants competing at Saturday's event.

I really hope I’m not required to choose a favorite event. I would be hard pressed to choose between the Nevada Day Parade and the annual Taste of Downtown. Luckily, I can adore them both, and for much the same reason. They are a celebration of community, of Carson City, of our historic downtown and all that it has to offer. In addition to 'The Taste', the Brewery Arts Center goes country with the Southern Drawl Band on its outdoor stage, and Madam Curry leads another downtown Ghost Walk. Carson City’s tastiest event coming up Saturday, July 23

There’s a reason that “Taste of Downtown” holds true to its name. Dozens of Carson City restaurants will participate in this evening event, giving residents and visitors alike the chance to sample food, dig into unique dishes and get a feel for the vibe of the local cuisine.

Whether it’s burgers, nachos, tamales, or Thai food, participants are likely to find it in downtown Carson City on July 23, the date that “Taste” is scheduled in honor of its 23rd year. Restaurants like “The Thick Slice Pizza,” “Red’s Old 395 Grill,” and “Yang’s Kitchen” are taking part.

Advocates to End Domestic Violence honor Taste of DownTown anniversary with ticket offer

This Saturday would have traditionally been the date of the 23rd Taste of DownTown, hosted by Advocates to End Domestic Violence. However, the date has been changed to July 23.

In honor of Advocates' would-be 23rd anniversary, the first 23 people who purchase tickets online this Saturday, June 18, will receive a free Advocates to End Domestic Violence water bottle.

Carson City District Attorney's Office organizes 'Law Suits Clothing Drive' throughout April

The Office of the District Attorney in Carson City is collecting new or used business attire. The clothing collected will be donated to Classy Seconds which, through the work of Advocates to End Domestic Violence, provides free business attire to individuals seeking to enter or re-enter the job market.

Annual Pinwheel Planting at the Legislature this Friday

Snow showers greet Carson City morning commuters

Carson City residents woke up to at least an inch or more of snow Friday morning, which made for slow going along local roads.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. this morning for the Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley, Virginia City and Dayton areas.

My snow dance worked! The weather should start clearing up for the next few days, so the roads should be clear. There’s no need to leave our valley though, great things are happening. The annual Share Your Christmas food drive goes on for most of the day: you don’t even need to leave your car, just drive up to the Governor’s Mansion, and someone will get your donation to the right place. Unwind, decompress and relax at a number of our great bars and restaurants.

Local Art Gallery Nominated for Small Business of the Year Award

Carson City, NV–The national small business movement, Independent We Stand, announced the quarterfinalists of the 2015 Independent We Stand Independent Small Business of the Year Award. Nearly 22,000 votes were cast for 315 nominees during the nominations phase. For the second year in a row, Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery has been nominated for this award and made it to the quarter-final stage of voting.

Donations sought: Taste of Downtown forced to move event date, causes budget shortfall

This summer, Carson City and surrounding communities have experienced domestic violence at alarming rates. Kirsten Krasovec and Carson City Sheriff's Office Deputy Carl Howell were both killed at the hands of domestic violence abusers, and local shelters have been filled to capacity for months now.

Advocates to End Domestic Violence Light after Dark Walk/Run rescheduled for Saturday

Advocates to End Domestic Violence has rescheduled the Light after Dark Walk/Run to this coming Saturday, Oct. 24. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and warm-ups will begin at 5:30pm.

Due to the conditions of the track from rain from this past Saturday, the walk/run was postponed. We are happy to announce this new date and we hope to see a lot of people come and remember Kirsten Krasovec and support our fight against domestic violence and sexual assault as we light the way.
