Advocates to End Domestic Violence

Carson High School celebrated its first Week of Respect Oct. 3-7. Students and staff participated in daily activities promoting positive interactions to support a safe and respectful learning environment. Highlights of the week included interactive game stations where students gathered in Senator Square and engaged in board games and brain teasers.

Filled with the spirit of fall in the air, the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson City, and its supporters, Friends of the NSRM, will host the second annual Harvest Train event over two weekends in October.

Street Vibes and the Candy Dance are always the endcap to September. Arts and crafts take over the small hamlet of Genoa this weekend; get a jump on your holiday gift list. All the other corners of Northern Nevada are a playground for the thousands of motorcycle riders and enthusiasts here to enjoy the bike rally. Battle Born Harley on Research Way offers a huge party without ever leaving the valley. Those two events are hardly all that Carson City and our neighboring counties have to offer, however. Keep reading for more fun than you’ll know what to do with.

High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents this month a benefit dance party Saturday, September 24 at the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City.

This month, all profits from our dance will be donated to Advocates to End Domestic Violence. Join us for a night of fabulous dancing and help this worthy charity in the process. At 6:30 p.m., special guest instructor, Kelly Lynn Ford will teach a lesson in intermediate West Coast Swing. Social dance is 7:30-10 p.m.

If you are new to Carson City area or maybe just retired from your job and looking for something to do that will give you an opportunity to meet and socialize with a great group of woman as well as give something to our community then our group maybe for you. Native and newcomers is a club dedicated to serve our community by using our time and talents to raise money to give such things as Scholarships to local schools, meals on wheels, monetary gifts to Camp TLC to help terminal ill children enjoy summer camp experience away from hospital.

A brief ceremony was held Monday at the Carson City Sheriff's Office building to honor Deputy Carl Howell who died in the line of duty while responding to a domestic violence call a year ago on this date, August 15, 2015.

The ceremony was attended by Howell's family members, sheriff's office staff and personnel, the Carson City Fire Department and city leaders.

Results of the 2016 Taste of Downtown Carson City fundraiser for Advocates to End Domestic Violence (AEDV) are in, and Red's Old 395 Grill on South Carson Street claimed the Best Overall award out of the nearly 40 restaurants competing at Saturday's event.

Curry Street, from Third to Spear, was jammed with vendor tents and thousands of walking palates eager to get a taste of downtown Carson City.

I really hope I’m not required to choose a favorite event. I would be hard pressed to choose between the Nevada Day Parade and the annual Taste of Downtown. Luckily, I can adore them both, and for much the same reason. They are a celebration of community, of Carson City, of our historic downtown and all that it has to offer. In addition to 'The Taste', the Brewery Arts Center goes country with the Southern Drawl Band on its outdoor stage, and Madam Curry leads another downtown Ghost Walk. Lisa Lee, director of Advocates to End Domestic Violence, is this week's guest on It's Your City. She and host Cortney Bloomer discuss Saturday's upcoming Taste of Downtown Carson City, which benefits Advocates to End Domestic Violence.

There’s a reason that “Taste of Downtown” holds true to its name. Dozens of Carson City restaurants will participate in this evening event, giving residents and visitors alike the chance to sample food, dig into unique dishes and get a feel for the vibe of the local cuisine.

Whether it’s burgers, nachos, tamales, or Thai food, participants are likely to find it in downtown Carson City on July 23, the date that “Taste” is scheduled in honor of its 23rd year. Restaurants like “The Thick Slice Pizza,” “Red’s Old 395 Grill,” and “Yang’s Kitchen” are taking part.

This Saturday would have traditionally been the date of the 23rd Taste of DownTown, hosted by Advocates to End Domestic Violence. However, the date has been changed to July 23.

In honor of Advocates' would-be 23rd anniversary, the first 23 people who purchase tickets online this Saturday, June 18, will receive a free Advocates to End Domestic Violence water bottle.

Step into the past today: the Pony Express re-ride is coming through town. It’s anticipated around 2 p.m. and you can follow their path online HERE. World War II buffs are going to love the Wings of Freedom tour at the Minden Airport; you have until Sunday afternoon to see the planes. Head to Telegraph Square downtown for the first Community Art Night sponsored by Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery and the Charlie B. Gallery.

Helping businesses and other organizations make the best use of social media will be the focus of the Carson City Visitors Bureau’s third annual Social Media in Tourism Symposium on Friday and Saturday at the Brewery Arts Center.

It is finally Friday. Leave the workweek behind and go have some fun. The Carson Nugget is a one-stop shop for a good time: food, drinks, comedy, and then a late night DJ all under one roof. The Office of the District Attorney in Carson City is collecting new or used business attire. The clothing collected will be donated to Classy Seconds which, through the work of Advocates to End Domestic Violence, provides free business attire to individuals seeking to enter or re-enter the job market.

The annual Pinwheel Planting Ceremony on the Legislative Lawn in Carson City will be on Friday, April 8, 11 a.m. for Child Abuse Prevention Month. Help plant pinwheels on the lawn at the legislature with community members. Wear blue for 'Go Blue Day.'

Thursday marks the start of our drive to purchase a diaper changing station for our shelter office. We need your help to raise $350 before the end of this week.

When Carson City community members think of Carson High School, do positive thoughts of educational wonder, professional career and technical opportunities, and hilarious fun at the myriad events offered by the school come to mind?

Okay all you procrastinators, if you planned on making it to the Arlington Square Ice Rink, then today is your last chance. With a temperature around 50, it should be a perfect day to skate one last time. Show some Senator Pride tonight at the Community Center as 24 seniors compete for ‘Mr. Carson High.’ There’s a lot going on this weekend, so take a look at the list and go have some fun.

Women's Self Defense Seminar: Improve your personal safety by learning specific techniques to enhance situational awareness, avoidance and protection in a self defense situation.

Defend against a bigger, stronger attacker. You will learn defensive moves against bear hugs, chokes, wrist grabs, being taken to the ground, knives, guns and more.

Seminar is $10 per person, with proceeds to benefit Advocates to End Domestic Violence.

Carson City residents woke up to at least an inch or more of snow Friday morning, which made for slow going along local roads.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. this morning for the Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley, Virginia City and Dayton areas.

My snow dance worked! The weather should start clearing up for the next few days, so the roads should be clear. There’s no need to leave our valley though, great things are happening. The annual Share Your Christmas food drive goes on for most of the day: you don’t even need to leave your car, just drive up to the Governor’s Mansion, and someone will get your donation to the right place. Unwind, decompress and relax at a number of our great bars and restaurants.

Carson City, NV–The national small business movement, Independent We Stand, announced the quarterfinalists of the 2015 Independent We Stand Independent Small Business of the Year Award. Nearly 22,000 votes were cast for 315 nominees during the nominations phase. For the second year in a row, Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery has been nominated for this award and made it to the quarter-final stage of voting.

All month long you can help us to raise food in our community. Our clinic, in conjunction with our local Advocates to End Domestic Violence, are asking that you help us raise food for the families at this shelter by donating non-perishable items such as canned or dried foods, diapers, evaporated milk, etc. Make a donation of one bag of these items and you will receive a gift from our office as a special thank you from our community. This summer, Carson City and surrounding communities have experienced domestic violence at alarming rates. Kirsten Krasovec and Carson City Sheriff's Office Deputy Carl Howell were both killed at the hands of domestic violence abusers, and local shelters have been filled to capacity for months now.

Advocates to End Domestic Violence has rescheduled the Light after Dark Walk/Run to this coming Saturday, Oct. 24. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and warm-ups will begin at 5:30pm.

Due to the conditions of the track from rain from this past Saturday, the walk/run was postponed. We are happy to announce this new date and we hope to see a lot of people come and remember Kirsten Krasovec and support our fight against domestic violence and sexual assault as we light the way.
