Advocates to End Domestic Violence

Take advantage of the spring sunshine and seize the day. Virginia City roars with the sound of their annual Grand Prix. Beer and brats aren’t usually associated with ballet, but the Sierra Nevada Ballet makes the annual event at the Brewery Arts Center a great time for all. The Earth Spirit Faire wraps up its weekend of wellness at the Community Center. The Earth Spirit Faire has returned to the Nevada state capital, featuring several craft vendors and practitioners in the healing arts, massage, and intuitive readings inside the Carson City Community Center gymnasium Saturday and Sunday.

Dozens of vendors are expected in celebration of Earth at the annual Earth Spirit Faire held this year at the Carson City Community Center this Saturday and Sunday, April 29 - 30. The faire runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center.

Nine years ago, the Kiwanis Club of Carson City, established in 1959, were approached by the Jaycee’s of Carson City. For 30 years they had sponsored and provided the annual Easter Egg Hunt, primarily at Governor’s Field on Easter Sunday.

The Office of the District Attorney in Carson City is collecting new or used business attire the entire month of April 2017. The clothing collected will be donated to Classy Seconds which, through the work of Advocates to End Domestic Violence, provides free business attire to individuals seeking to enter or re-enter the job market.

Bringing an American reality television series to CHS Business Students is another reason why Carson High School is a cutting edge high school. Thanks to teachers Billy McHenry and Angila Golik as well as Carson City community professionals, students are offered real life experiences.

The cast this year for the Carson City Vagina Monologues is small, but mighty. Eight women will take the stage to perform and raise money for Advocates to End Domestic Violence. The show, which is in its fifth year in Carson City runs February 10 and 11 at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall.

Two days of performances with three shows in the mix will highlight Carson City Vagina Monologues 2017, Feb. 10, 7 p.m. and Feb. 11, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center.

For 15 years, employees of the First Judicial District Court, Carson City Justice and Municipal Court and Alternative Sentencing Department adopt families and seniors for the holiday season. Through employee and judge donations, gifts and food are given to families from Advocates to End Domestic Violence and to seniors to brighten their holidays.

Local restaurants and eateries fed thousands at the 2016 Taste of Downtown event held July 23 in downtown Carson City, generating tens of thousands of dollars for Advocates to End Domestic Violence (AEDV) and its shelter.

The businesses in downtown Carson City are coming together to throw a party to celebrate the completion of the construction in the downtown corridor.

Halloween is two weeks away, the Nevada Day Parade a few days before, and the 2016 election a few days after. Learn more about our local races during the Chamber of Commerce Candidate Forum today at noon. It will be streaming live right here on CarsonNow.org. Kids will enjoy the Makerspace at the Carson City Library where they can get their hands on some fun, yet educational, activities. Advocates to End Domestic Violence is holding a week long toiletry drive beginning today: donations will be accepted at Classy Seconds Thrift Shop and are much appreciated.

Harvest time at the Nevada State Railroad Museum (NSRM) started Saturday in Carson City with a cornucopia of family fun and entertainment.

The Harvest Train returned to Carson City Saturday morning for another two-weekend run in October, steaming into Wabuska Station to begin its celebration of the fall season.

I’m usually a lover of sunny days, but right now I say bring on the rain. The moisture is a welcome help to our heroic firefighters in Lake Tahoe and Washoe Valley. Because of the wet weather and the recent fires, some activities have been postponed: most notably the Advocates to End Domestic Violence’s Annual Light After Dark Run. There are still plenty of things to occupy your time, but the weather may force more cancellations.
