Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties hosts its August meeting on Thursday, August 11, 2022 at 9am, with an option to attend either in-person or via Zoom (connection details below). Those who choose the in-person option can attend at the Silver Springs Community Center’s Lahontan Meeting room at 2945 Fort Churchill Street, Silver Springs (the community center is located on the left side of the Silver Springs Senior Center building).

CARSON CITY — Western Nevada College and the University of Nevada Reno Extension are among recent federal grant recipients to receive financial packages to make distance learning upgrades and aid in the expansion of educational services in 14 rural counties.

Heading into Thursday, Sept. 12, 2019, events around the capital city region include a morning hike at Lake Tahoe, a Healthy Communities meeting in Virginia City, a cross-country convoy of vintage military vehicles that will make a stopover at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, activities at the Carson City Library, book author presentations at the Nevada State Library and Archives and the Brewery Arts Center, food trucks at Mills Park and more. VIRGINIA CITY, Nev. — Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties September breakfast meeting is on Thursday, Sept 12 at 9am at the Storey County Community Center in Virginia City.

Guest speakers this month are Ginger Paulsen from Reno Behavioral Healthcare Hospital, and Robin Reedy from state of Nevada chapter of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness).

Attendees will learn about the basic operation, purpose,and function of an AED and why it is important to know the location of the nearest AED unit in public places.

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey’s June public meeting takes place on Thursday, June 14 at 9am at the Lahontan Room of the Silver Springs Community Center, 2945 Ft Churchill St, Silver Springs, NV 89429.

Guest speakers at this month’s breakfast meeting include Rita Greggio and Allison Cladianos who will describe their program, the Northern Nevada Alliance for Health and Justice, a medical legal partnership between Northern Nevada HOPES and Washoe Legal Services. The program is based at HOPES and is available to assist patients of HOPES with civil legal problems.

The nonprofit Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey counties is inviting volunteers to help beautify the Dayton Food Pantry, the nonprofit garden center Community Roots & Shoots, and Healthy Communities grounds on Sunday, May 20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 209 Dayton Valley Road.

Retired Carson High School teacher Brian Reedy of Carson City will join more than 300 other advocates in Washington, D.C. March 19-21 to meet with their Members of Congress to share their stories of the personal impact Parkinson’s disease has made on their lives and the lives of their loved ones.

Carson Tahoe Health and Walmart announce the opening of the newest location for basic health care services – “The Carson Tahoe Clinic at Walmart.” This convenient care clinic is now open to patients and will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, inside the Walmart located at 1511 Grant Avenue, off Highway 395.

CARSON CITY – State Senate Republican leaders today commended GOP Gov. Brian Sandoval’s decision to expand the state Medicaid program as a commitment to the health of all Nevadans and a boost for a critical sector of the state’s economy.

“Ensuring that poor Nevadans have access to primary health care through Medicaid is very simply the right thing to do, both for our citizens and our economy,” said Sen. Michael Roberson, R-Henderson. “It will reduce our rate of uninsured and provide individuals with greater economic security.”

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval today announced he will include 78,000 additional people in Nevada’s Medicaid program as provided for under the federal Affordable Care Act.

“Though I have never liked the Affordable Care Act because of the individual mandate it places on citizens, the increased burden on businesses and concerns about access to health care, the law has been upheld by the Supreme Court,” he said in a statement. “As such, I am forced to accept it as today’s reality and I have decided to expand Nevada’s Medicaid coverage.

CARSON CITY – Assembly Speaker and 3^rd Congressional District candidate John Oceguera, D-Las Vegas, declined today to say whether he supports the federal health care law now under review by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Oceguera, who is termed out of office in the Assembly, said it is premature to comment on the law given the fact that it is awaiting a decision on its constitutionality by the nation’s high court.

Carson City, Nev. (March 13, 2012) – As Nevada faces yet another challenge in national health rankings, the Nevada Health Centers, Inc. takes a stand to improve health access in the Silver state. Marilyn Wills has been named director of the Office of Consumer Health Assistance by Mike Willden, director of the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

Dozens of Nevada’s nonprofit groups, service providers and others met this week in Reno and Las Vegas to consider the looming threat of deep cuts to the state budget cuts which threaten to eliminate or dramatically reduce health care, education, and human services.
