Graham's Word: Chris Ault Steps Down At Nevada
Chris Ault, the Godfather of the “Pistol Offense” has decided to step down from his position as head coach of the Nevada football team. As I stated in my previous article, I believe that he is the best coach for this program but in the back of my mind I saw this change coming. With the way the program has gone the last couple of years after Colin Kaepernick left, and with his staff diminishing under him it was only a matter of time.
I don’t think that the Nevada fans who wanted him to quit realize what Coach Ault has done for the Nevada football program. I pointed out a few things that he has done in my last article. Ault is responsible for putting Nevada on the national map in a lot of ways. I believe it will take a while for Nevada to have the kind of success it did under Ault without him at the helm.
A lot of fans believe he has retired. I don’t. I believe he will move on to a different program that needs rebuilding and try to turn them into a successful program. Ault stated in the press conference today: “With great humility and mixed emotions, I’ve decided it’s time for me to step down.” “Wolf Pack football has firmly established a blueprint for success that can be sustained.”
Is it possible that Ault is done with coaching? Yes, of course he could be, but I just don’t think that he thinks he is done. With what he said at the press conference I see him coaching elsewhere in the near future. Remember, he didn’t say he was retiring, he just stepped down.
Now, it is up to Nevada to find a new Head Coach. A lot of speculation has gone around already as to who will be Ault’s replacement.
Nevada will miss Chris Ault, and if he does indeed decide to hang up his clipboard he will be going out as one of the best coaches in NCAA football history.
As I have said before, I would like to have him as a guest on my show “He Said, She Said Sports Show” coming in February 2013.
