Management change made at Carson City animal shelter
Management changes have been made at the Carson City animal facility, city officials confirmed Thursday. Gail Radtke, who served as the animal services manager, is no longer with the city.
Bob Elliott, who is the current Environmental Health Inspector with Carson City Health and Human Services, will be the interim manager. A permanent replacement will be done in a search.
"We have a mission and a philosophy that simply wasn't being followed to the level it should have been in the treatment of animals and reuniting people with animals therefore we made the changes," said Carson City Manager Larry Werner.
The changes were made following an incident August 2 in which a Carson City woman learned her dog was euthanized. The woman, Jeraldine Archuleta, claims she didn't have the money at the time to take her dog Rollie from the facility but intended to so do.
The following is a news release from Carson City:
City Animal Services Update
Based on the results of a recent evaluation and a need to re-focus the direction and goals of Animal Services, Carson City, this week, made some management changes.
Bob Elliott, currently an Environmental Health inspector with Carson City Health and Human Services, is temporarily overseeing operations on site.
The City Manager is working with a company to place an experienced manager into the position while we conduct a national search. We are looking for a candidate who has managed employees in a city or county government capacity, has political savvy and relates well to community groups. The candidate must also be able to deal with
controversy and be comfortable with the media. We expect to have an interim in place within the next two weeks.A staff member experienced in customer service will be mentoring the front counter personnel.
Nicki Aaker, the new Health Director, has almost completed the re-writes of pertinent policy dealing with impounding, the handling of strays and euthanasia. Additionally, she has developed a Code of Conduct for Animal Services Officers that will be posted in the office and online.
