‘Quenching Steel’ emergency management exercise begins in Carson City, Lyon County
Team members in the Carson City-based Nevada National Guard 92nd Civil Support Team move a soldier to safety following a mock accident during the “Quenching Steel” exercise in the Capital City on Tuesday.
The “Quenching Steel” exercise, which is set to run through Thursday, is sponsored by the Carson City and Lyon counties Emergency Management offices and U.S. Army North; participating agencies include the Nevada National Guard, Capitol Police, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and the Quad County Hazardous Material Response Team.
During the three-day exercise, all of the agencies will test their ability to integrate their resources and cooperatively respond to any chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear threat in the Quad County region. Tuesday’s mock scenario included the inspection of a clandestine drug laboratory in the abandoned building at 657 S. Stewart St. that included a supposed chemical suit malfunction and subsequent Soldier rescue.
The three-day exercise will also serve as the 92nd Civil Support Team’s evaluation exercise; the team members will learn if they have been fully certified by U.S. Army North evaluators on Friday. The Nevada Guard’s 92nd team is only the second National Guard civil support team to undergo an evaluation by U.S.
Army North since the Department of Defense eased its COVID-19 travel restrictions in June. The Nevada Guard’s 92nd Civil Support Team includes 18 Soldiers and four Airmen trained to respond and assist civilian first responders in hazardous cases involving any CBRN material.
The team will be in Silver Springs at the Silver Springs Women’s Prison on Thursday.
