Carson City area weather: Gusty winds, low humidity Monday prompt Red Flag Warning
Gusty winds and low humidity around Carson City, the Lake Tahoe Basin and throughout western and northern Nevada has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag Warning for Monday afternoon through evening.
The warning is from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. and covers the northern Sierra Front including Carson City, Douglas, Storey, Southern Washoe, Western Lyon, and Far Southern Lassen counties; the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Plumas and Lassen forests, the southern Sierra Front including Alpine, northern Mono, southern Lyon, and western Mineral counties, West Humboldt Basin in Pershing County, the Lahontan Basin including Churchill and Eastern Mineral counties and Northern Washoe County, eastern Sierra and eastern Nevada counties on the California side.
Forecasters say winds will be out of the southwest winds 20 to 25 mph with gusts 35 to 40 mph, with humidity anywhere from 7 to 12 percent. The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
The weather services advises people to avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires. Follow local fire restrictions, see the weather service website for updates and go to livingwithfire.info for preparedness tips.
