Carson City jobless trends down in May, Reno and Las Vegas see increases
Carson City bucked the Silver State's two other metro areas in May with a decline in unemployment, according to figures released Tuesday by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation
The capital city's jobless rate fell both annually and over the month to 6.5 percent from April's 6.7 percent. The jobless rate in Reno/Sparks rose slightly to 5.5 percent and also increased slightly in Las Vegas to 6.4 percent.
While the May metro area unemployment rates varied relative to April, unemployment continued to drop over the year, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
“The upward movement in the largest metro area rates mirrored the statewide increase to 6.1 percent (seasonally adjusted) reported last week,” said Anderson. “Despite the employment decline over-the-month, each of the state’s population centers gained jobs on a year-over-year basis. Monthly volatility is not cause for concern, as the Silver State’s labor market continues to show positive signs with record employment growth.”
For the month of May, all Nevada counties have an unemployment rate below 9 percent.
