Carson City region under weather service 'Freeze Warning' overnight into Monday morning
After a windy Saturday knocked out power and downed a few trees around Carson City, unseasonable cold air will continue to move into the Carson City region Sunday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Freeze Warning from Sunday night through Monday morning.
Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 25 possible. Areas at greatest risk for freezing temperatures include, the Reno North Valleys, Carson City, Lyon County, Carson Valley, Grass Valley south of Winnemucca, and Lovelock, according to the weather service.
Forecasters advise temperatures will be low enough for frost and freeze conditions cold enough to kill crops and other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. The freeze warning is from 11 p.m. Sunday night to 9 a.m. Monday morning.
The weather service advises to take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
As for Sunday, daytime high temperatures today are expected to top out in the mid to upper 50s in western Nevada and the upper 40s to low 50s in the Sierra. Skies are expected to clear tonight, with cold dry air and efficient radiative cooling many areas around the region will see near or below freezing temperatures by Monday morning.
Temperatures warm back up about 10 degrees Monday afternoon with the low valleys rebounding to normal June temperatures by Tuesday.
