Nevada law enforcement agencies participate in three-day gang conference
Law enforcement agencies from around Nevada convened in Reno this week for a conference on gangs. The event, which wraps up Wednesday, was hosted by the Tri-County Gang Unit that represents Carson City, Lyon County and Douglas County.
The three-day conference brought 70 officers together from 12 different agencies to attend classes and share information, said Carson City Sheriff’s Sgt. Daniel Gonzales.
“The classes have been intensive in areas such as the gang and drug nexus, various gangs and outlaw motorcycle gangs. We have listened to former gang members, as guest speakers, who were known on a national level,” said Gonzales.
Classes were also held on new laws regarding gangs and search and seizure. The classes were taught by Melanie Porter, Carson City Deputy District Attorney.
The conference was made possible through the state of Nevada with a federal Justice Assistance Grant. This allowed conference attendees to participate at no charge and brought departments from across the state representing areas such as parole and probation, juvenile probation, corrections and various sheriff’s and police departments.
Though some gang membership numbers have been waning nationally over the years, the conference addressed the phenomenon of gangs using more sophisticated means of showing their affiliation that go unseen to the untrained eye.
“The gangster of 15 years ago is different in projecting membership and alliance today,” said Gonzales. “Some of the symbolism is more subtle.”
Three members of the Tri-County Gang unit recently went out of the area to work with law enforcement at other agencies and to study investigative techniques, said Gonzales.
Though not held annually the conference happened because of the availability of the JAG grant and the cooperation of the three sheriff’s from Carson City, Douglas and Lyon counties and the assistance of the Carson City District Attorney’s Office.
