Schmidt named Nevada's chief economist for state employment agency
Nevada's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation's deputy chief, David Schmidt, was promoted to serve as the state's employment agency chief economist in the research and analysis bureau, DETR's director announced Tuesday.
“I am delighted to have David on board in this key leadership position. David brings with him nearly 12 years of experience in the bureau, a familiarity with its operation, and a long-term knowledge of Nevada’s unemployment,” said DETR's Director Don Soderberg in a news release.
Schmidt replaces William Anderson who was named director of the state's Department of Taxation earlier this month.
As chief economist, Schmidt will supervise the labor market and economic research activities of a staff of 30; administers the Bureau’s $4 million budget and provides useful analyses to departmental senior staff, other executive branch managers, public policymakers, the general public and the media.
“I look forward to this new and exciting opportunity within the Bureau and am proud to serve the state in my new capacity,” Schmidt said. “I hope to carry on the Bureau’s great work and ensure it continues as Nevada’s primary provider of workforce information.”
Prior to his appointment, Schmidt served as the Deputy Chief Financial Officer for DETR’s Financial Management Division, where he managed the DETR Financial Management Unit, and DETR Unemployment budget activities. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Reno, Nevada. His office is located in Carson City.
