Senators tame Grizzlies, 51-38, in OT to win regional playoff game
The Carson High boys varsity basketball team reached the second round of the NIAA North Division I Regional Playoffs by defeating Sierra League rival Galena, 51-38, Friday night at Spanish Springs High School in Sparks.
The Senators and Grizzlies played pretty even in the opening period. Carson held a slim one point lead going into the second quarter.
By the halftime break, though, Carson High had opened up a nine-point lead by outscoring the Grizzlies 13-5 in the second period.
However, Galena came roaring back with a big second half that took the Senators to the wire.
The Grizzlies tied the game at 30-30 after three periods, outscoring Carson 16-7 in the third eight-minute frame.
Galena held the lead by two points, 38-36, as the final seconds of the fourth quarter ticked away. But the Senators tied the score at 38-38 with 10 seconds left on the game clock.
The score remained tied 38-38 after the fourth quarter ended, forcing the game into overtime.
Then the Senators pulled away in the extra frame.
Tez Allen sunk a pair of free-throws with under a minute to play in the extra period, and Asa Carter scored five points in overtime to help Carson High secure the victory.
The Senators move forward into the second round of regional tournament play tomorrow night at 6 p.m., squaring off against the Reno High Huskies at Spanish Springs High School in Sparks.
