I-580 Bellevue Road overpass temporarily closes for seismic bridge improvements
Beginning Wednesday, the 48-year-old Bellevue Road bridge over Interstate 580 north of Carson City in Washoe Valley is temporarily closed for $15 million worth of seismic retrofit work and enhancements, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.
The Bellevue Road overpass and ramps will be closed for around three months for the road improvements. Traffic wishing to take the bridge will be detoured via Alternate 395/Bowers Mansion Road to reach I-580. Interstate traffic will still be able to travel I-580 through Washoe Valley.
The bridge was first constructed in 1968, and is being renovated as part of NDOT’s continuing efforts to seismically retrofit older bridges for enhanced safety and stability during potential earthquakes. The bridge’s aging abutments and side panels will be repaired and replaced, and the roadway approaches to the bridge widened and repaved.
The bridge improvements are part of an NDOT project, begun last fall, to enhance I-580 through Washoe Valley. As part of the project, crews have repaved approximately seven miles of interstate surface through the valley, with remaining repaving to take place this summer. The project will also seismically retrofit and enhance the Eastlake Boulevard underpass and build an auxiliary merge lane from Alternative U.S. 395/Eastlake Boulevard to southbound I-580 in north Carson City.
The approximately $15 million project by Q & D Construction is scheduled to complete in the fall of 2016. Approximately 32,000 vehicles travel I-580 daily in the area. Project details are available at nevadadot.com.
