Senators Football: Spanish Springs Holds Their Own Against Carson
Carson took on Spanish Springs Friday night in a textbook definition of a lively varsity football game. The contest was held at Carson who came in at 2-0 prior and the Cougars of Spanish Springs who came in at 1-1. It was a close game no doubt, with Spanish Springs edging out Carson 28-27.
In the first quarter, Spanish Springs was able to capitalize on their first possession of the game after receiving the opening kick-off and drove down the field with a drive ending 2 yard touchdown run with 8:01 left in the first quarter. Asa Carter of Carson got an interception late in the first but Carson was unable to make much of it.
In the second quarter, Spanish Springs continued to look strong after punching in another 2 yard touchdown run with 8:51 left in the half. Finally the Senators would show some promise after quarterback Nolan Shine threw a perfect pass to Ian Schulz who would take it all the way to the house and finally putting some life in the Carson team and crowd with 7:09 remaining in the half.
With the half dwindling down, Spanish Springs got a safety with 3:49 left, but were unable to make anything of the good field possession after the punt and would eventually punt themselves; however, Ikela Lewis blocked that punt and set Carson up with amazing field possession with less than two minutes left in the half. The very next play Nolan Shine would rack up touch down number two throwing a missile to receiver Dylin Rooker, but the 2 point conversion was no good leaving the score at 16-13 Spanish Springs.
With 1:44 left Asa Carter would strike again pulling in yet another interception and on the very next play Carter threw an easy pitch-and-catch touchdown pass to receiver Connor Padere and just like that the Senators took the lead. Spanish Springs was able to drive down the field and set up their field goal unit in decent range, but the field goal with two seconds left in the half was no good.
During half time the Varsity, Junior Varsity and freshmen cheerleaders gave a performance along with around twenty girls under the age of 12 who also aspired to be cheerleaders when they enter high school. After their performance, the Blue Thunder Marching band gave their performance led by Drum Major Garrett Lawson.
To begin Act II of the contest, Dylin Rooker of Carson took the kick-off well passed the 50 yard line and Carson immediately capitalized on the first play from scrimmage when Nolan Shine broke away on a huge quarterback keeper to expand the Senator’s lead to 11. Spanish Springs was far from finished on their offensive game play; however, punching in another goal line run to rack up 6, but the two point conversion was no good leaving the score 27-22 entering the fourth quarter.
In the final chapter of this matchup, Spanish Springs threw a touchdown in the back of the endzone for a quick six, and once again the Cougars would go for the two point conversion. They came up short on the conversion, but did take the lead for the first time of the half with less than 5 minutes left to play. After a decent drive by the Senators, Carson set up for a field goal to take the lead with under a minute left, but the kick would end up wide left.
Carson got the ball on about the Spanish Springs 45 with ten seconds left after holding the Cougars to a punt, but after two failed attempts to throw the ball to the endzone it was Spanish Springs who would eventually come out on top in a very exciting match up. Final score Spanish Springs: 28, Carson: 27.
