Supreme Court candidate to speak at Democratic tele-luncheon
Ozzie Fumo, Nevada State Assembly member for District 21 in Las Vegas and candidate for the Nevada Supreme Court, Seat D, will be the featured speaker at Monday's virtual Democratic luncheon. Fumo advanced from the June 9th primary election and now faces District Court Judge Douglas Herndon in the November 3rd general election.
Below is Ozzie Fumo's candidate profile published by the Clark County Bar Association.
"Assemblyman Ozzie Fumo has been a practicing trial attorney in Las Vegas for over two decades. Uniquely qualified to serve on the Supreme Court, Ozzie has spent his career fighting for the rights of Nevadans from all walks of life.
A first-generation American, Ozzie grew up in Las Vegas and was first elected to the State Legislature in 2016. As an Assemblyman, Ozzie’s two sessions in Carson City have been marked by significant legislative success. In 2017, he sponsored Harvey’s Law and the law that makes our jury pools more representative. In 2019, he helped guide Brooklynn’s Law into legislation and eventually into law.
In private practice, he has stepped up to help seal the records of those who have paid their debt to society and simply want fresh start to their lives. He also has trial experience at the state, federal, and 9th Circuit level as well as trying death penalty cases.
One of the few members of the community to sit as a Hearing Master on Metro’s Public Fact Finding Police Use of Force Board, Ozzie has also served as a Judicial Referee in Las Vegas Justice Court. He has received the prestigious State Bar of Nevada Pro Bono Advocate of the Year Award for helping the indigent; is AV Rated by Martindale Hubble (their highest rating); has been named the 2019 Defender of the Year by the Nevada Attorneys for Criminal Justice (NACJ); and was named the 2019 Consumer Advocate of the Year by the Nevada Trial Lawyers Association. He is also a member of Super Lawyers.
Today, as he runs for our State Supreme Court, Ozzie is an adjunct professor at the UNLV Boyd School of Law. A husband, father, and grandfather, and he is proud to have called Las Vegas his home for over 40 years."
Ozzie Fumo is a partner at the Pitaro & Fumo law firm, where he was honored as being among the Top 100 Criminal Defense Lawyers of 2015 by the American Society of Legal Advocates. He is currently the only Supreme Court candidate with firsthand experience writing legislation, trying death penalty cases, and effectively arguing cases before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
In the State Assembly, Fumo championed bills to end the death penalty, end cash bail, and codify automatic teacher raises into law. He fought for legislation to make jury pools more reflective of community diversity. He also sponsored Harvey’s Law to protect some of our most vulnerable Nevadans, and championed Brooklynn’s Law, named after 13-year-old honor roll student, competitive gymnast, runner and violinist Brooklynn Mohler of Las Vegas, who was accidentally shot to death by her best friend using a 9mm Glock hand gun left loaded in the kitchen cabinet by her father, who faced no legal consequences under Nevada's existing criminal statutes.
Ozzie Fumo has said that he looks forward to meeting with and listening to Nevadans from all corners of the Silver State. Monday's luncheon will be a prime opportunity for him to do just that.
Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, this event is scheduled for noon on Monday, July 27th, and will be held online via Zoom teleconference due to the temporary shutdown of in-person venues. Those wishing to be on distribution for a link to the teleconference can email Rich Dunn, Men's Committee Events Coordinator, at richdunn@aol.com.
