Death with dignity advocate to speak at Carson City Democratic tele-luncheon
Featured speaker at Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon will be Paul Klein, a partner at Tri-Strategies LTD, a government relations and public affairs firm with offices in Reno and Las Vegas. He will be lobbying on behalf of Compassion & Choices for medical aid-in-dying legislation due to be introduced during the 81st session, which begins February 1st. The bill gives terminally ill people with six months or less to live the option of taking medicine to end their life peacefully.
Medical aid in dying is currently legal in ten states: California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Montana, Maine, New Jersey, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington. This will be the third attempt to pass such legislation in Nevada. In May 2017, a bill was passed by the State Senate which sought legalization, but when it passed to the Assembly the Committee on Health and Human Services chose not to advance the bill. Similar legislation was reintroduced at the 2019 session, and once again passed out of committee but was not brought to a full Senate vote before the deadline.
Paul Klein studied Pre-Law and Criminal Justice as an undergraduate at the University of Nevada, Reno, graduating in 2003, and went on to earn an MBA, Magna cum Laude, in 2014. Prior to joining Tri-Strategies in 2018 he served as Communications Director for the City of Reno, was Creative Director at the digital communications agency White Rabbit Group, partnered at Argentum Partners, and lectures at UNR. He chaired the Reno Recreation and Parks Commission from 2007 to 2011. He chaired the 2017 Heart Gala for the American Heart Association. Since 2005 he has served as the Western Region Chair of the American Advertising Federation, and holds that organization's Ethics in Advertising certification.
Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, this event is scheduled for noon on Monday, January 18th, and will be held online via Zoom teleconference due to the restricted availability of in-person venues. Those wishing to be on distribution for these Zoom links can email Rich Dunn, Men's Committee Events Coordinator, at richdunn@aol.com.
