Returning for its third year, more than 250 dirt bikes will roar and race in south Carson City with riders chasing their share of a $10,000 purse at the Fuji Park Flat Track dirt bike races on Saturday, August 25 at Fuji Park.

A 46-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for felony suspicion of attempting to break into a vehicle at a south Carson City Park and Ride area, a sheriff’s deputy said.

For the past four years, Angels With Flowers has donated floral arrangements to hospitals and senior care centers throughout the Carson City area. On Monday, the program, established by local florist Lori Morris, donated its 99th and 100th arrangement of 2018.

The second annual Carson City Fair brought local youth in agriculture, live music, home craft exhibitors, antique tractors and much more than last year. The fair provides a venue for local youth enrolled in 4-H, FFA and Grange to showcase their agricultural projects.

The 16th annual National Night Out, or as some like to call it, “Crime’s Going Away Party,” was held Tuesday evening in Mills Park and an excellent time was had by law enforcement and the public alike, demonstrating their commitment to the partnership between the community and law enforcement agencies.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Tuesday night to a vehicle rollover accident in the area of Fifth and Stewart Street in which one person was briefly trapped inside a vehicle.

MINDEN, Nev. — Information from an informant has led Douglas County Sheriff's Office investigators to a Gardnerville area residence where a search is underway for possible human remains on the property that may be tied to a homicide, said DCSO Undersheriff Paul Howell.

A fundraiser will be held Wednesday at Firehouse Subs in Carson City, and so far, nearly $23,000 has been raised overall for the family of Anthony Francone and Kristyn Smithwick of Carson City, whose children were injured in a fatal July 29 Oregon crash that took the life of the children's stepsister, 17-year-old Gabbi Smithwick.

Hat, sunscreen and hiking poles recommended. Some trails are dirt and others are paved. In case of bad weather, we will cancel.

Hikes are 4-6 miles in length with an elevation gain, sometimes over 500 feet and usually on single track trail. Evening hikes are usually 1½ hours or more duration. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is requesting the public’s help in identifying a suspicious subject who was found inside Carson High School on Aug. 1.

Funding for upgrades and new cameras for the 26-camera AlertTahoe network, which tracked more than 100 fires for firefighters in 2017, was announced Tuesday by the University of Nevada, Reno’s Nevada Seismological Lab Director Graham Kent in a presentation at the annual Lake Tahoe Summit.

UPDATE 4:42PM: The landfill fire has been fully contained, according to the Carson City Fire Department. The cause of the fire is still undetermined. The landfill will reopen Wednesday.

UPDATE 3:12PM: Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon reports the fire at the Carson City landfill Tuesday afternoon continues to put out a lot of smoke but is no longer spreading. The fire is burning dump-related material, he said and there's not a threat to the public. Some engines have already been released from the scene.

UPDATE: Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Tuesday afternoon to the area of the landfill off of Flint Road for a large fire initially reported to be a brush fire.

The call came into dispatch at around 2 p.m., reporting a heavy amount of black smoke coming from a construction area near the landfill.

Question 6 or the Renewable Energy Promotion Initiative will be on the Nevada statewide ballot this November and if it passes in 2018 and again in 2020, the measure would amend the State Constitution to mandate an increase in the state’s renewable portfolio standard to 50 percent by 2030.

Nevada Appeal publisher Michael (Mick) Raher will be the featured speaker at Monday's Carson City Democratic luncheon. A native of Australia, Raher was named publisher in January after decades of experience in sales, marketing and media management. He is also an avid participant in our region's snow and water sports.

Paul Dominique Laxalt, a former Nevada Governor, United States Senator, Lieutenant Governor and District Attorney, and one of former President Ronald Reagan’s closest friends in politics, died at a healthcare facility in Northern Virginia on Monday. He was 96.

The 20th Barracuda Championship at Montreux Golf and Country Club came down to two players with different mindsets entering Reno’s PGA Tour stop.

Chad Campbell, owner of four career PGA Tour wins, was playing his seventh consecutive event, grinding to secure his exempt status on tour. Andrew Putnam treated the week as a working vacation taking in the sights and serenity of Lake Tahoe.

UPDATE 10:47AM TUESDAY: Air quality readings in Carson City and Douglas County were in the "unhealthy" range, according to AirNow.gov. The National Weather Service advises periods of degraded air quality will continue. However, many areas could see thinning smoke for at least the next couple days as winds shift to more east to southeast direction. This would carry the bulk of any new smoke away from the area, forecasters say. This may be a short-lived break as westerly flow looks like it will return late in the week and for the weekend.

RoseBud's 8/3 concert moved to Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall

Due to heavy smoke settling on the area, the RoseBud's Dance Band's performance for Monday, Aug. 6, as part of the Carson City Jazz and Beyond Music and Art Festival has been moved to inside the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King St. The concert was originally planned for Comma Courtyard, but the performers want to present the event in a comfortable and healthy atmosphere.

Carson City Sheriff’s Office detectives have determined that the Sunday afternoon report of a shooting in Carson City at the I-580 and College Parkway exit was falsely reported by the victim, Sheriff Ken Furlong said.
