FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski to Visit South Lake Tahoe and Barton Memorial Hospital

The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Julius Genachowski, will visit Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe on Monday as part of a tour visiting health care facilities in California and Nevada. The visit coincides with the FCC's Rural Healthcare Pilot Program, in which Barton Health received funding.

Soroptimist of Carson City and Platinum+ Salon & Spa once again are hosting the Backpack Attack Program to provide backpacks & school supplies to Children in Need. The program works to provide comfort through backpacks, school supplies and hygiene items to as many children as possible.

Why is the Nye Regional Medical Center closing its doors?

I am writing to you about the recent statement about the Nye Regional Medical Center closing it doors if they don't get some help from the County or State. I enclosing a letter that explains why the state or county should allow it to close. There is serious mismanagement that has been going on for the last 4 years. Even through its the only health care facility's within a 100 plus miles still as a employee of the hospital I have witness many wrong doings and the placing of key personnel in positions that they would never be able to hold in any other hospital or clinic.

Public invited to grand opening of Sierra Nevada Health Center

Gordon, Board Chairman of Nevada Health Centers, Inc., and Thomas G. Chase, CEO of Nevada Health Centers, Inc.

Boys and Girls clubs receive grants to promote healthy eating and active lifestyle

The Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation announced that the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Elko Boys & Girls Club (Elko, Nev.) will both receive a $10,000 start-up grant to implement Triple Play programming. Additionally, Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows (Reno, Nev.) and Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada (Carson, Nev.) will receive $5,000 Triple Play Healthy Habits grants to provide programming focused on teaching the importance of healthy eating habits and being physically active.

Since the widely popular stength and conditioning program, Crossfit, came to Carson City, the Carson City Crossfit team have made it very clear to their members that more than anything, Crossfit is about planning and achieving goals.

Today, a group of women from Carson City Crossfit's All-Woman Bootcamp,PINK, met their monthly goal at the Sparks Foam Fest. The Sparks Foam Fest is a 5k marathon that is filled with many obstacles similar to that of the widely-known Tough Mudder.

Food For Thought offers summer lunch program

Food for Thought announces the sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program at Terrace Park in Carson City. Terrace Park is adjacent to Empire Elementary School. Lunch will be served to all children aged 2 to 18 who come to the park free of charge. Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, gender or disability, and there be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.

Dime-a-dance USO-style party

In honor of Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day, High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents a USO-style “dime-a-dance” party to honor veterans and servicepeople May 19 at the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City. There will be a lesson at 7 p.m., with the social dance at 8-10:30 p.m. Men may purchase tickets for 10 cents a dance (or 12 tickets for $1). Between 8 and 9 p.m., each time you dance with a different woman, give her a ticket, which will be entered into a 9 p.m. drawing for raffle prizes.

Use your feet on Nevada Moves Day

Many Carson City schoolchildren will take part in organized events to walk or bicycle to school on April 25, which has been proclaimed the third annual Nevada Moves Day by Governor Brian Sandoval.

The soaring atrium of the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center at the University of Nevada, Reno, which housed a 9.5-foot tree made entirely of old books during the holiday season, is now the site of another display using recycled goods. In celebration of Earth Day, Knowledge Center employees have erected a 7-feet-tall, 8-feet-wide “N,” constructed with 1,580 recycled water bottles collected in the center’s recycling receptacles.

Festival of Earthly Treasures ~ Rocks ~ Gems ~ Healing Arts ~

Come enjoy our Festival of Earthly Treasures from 11 am to 4 pm on Saturday, March 31st at the Elks Lodge ~ 515 N. Nevada Street, Carson City.

We will be featuring rocks, gems, healing arts, vendors, delicious tacos and belly dancing. Raffles prizes will be given away every 15 minutes.

Only $1 admission and kids 12 and under are free.

Proceeds to benefit Esperanza Foundation, a non-profit corporation dedicated to healing PTSD.
