HHS Report: 45,390 Nevadans have enrolled in Health Insurance Marketplace

Nevada enrollment in the Health Insurance Marketplace under the Affordable Care Act was 45,390 from Oct. 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Thursday.

Nevada's enrollment includes “in line” and other enrollment activity such as people enrolling due to a change in life circumstance reported through Saturday, April 19, 2014.

Nationwide, enrollment surged to eight million at the end of the first enrollment period, said HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

Nevada law officers honor their own fallen in memorial service at state capitol

The 17th annual Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Ceremony was held at the capitol building grounds Thursday in Carson City. The service honored the 126 Nevada peace officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

In 1998 the memorial was dedicated on the capitol grounds in Carson City to recognize the ultimate sacrifice the officers made in service to their communities. Officers from around Nevada participated in a relay with 126 stops that began April 24 in Las Vegas and ended in Carson City in time for Thursday's ceremony.

Signups begin for June 11-12 Carson River Watershed Bus Tour

The Carson Water Subconservancy District is offering a two-day bus tour of the Carson River Watershed from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on June 11-12, 2014. The Carson River Watershed “Get on the Bus Tour” will cover a variety of watershed topics and locations from the headwaters in Alpine County, CA to the terminus at the Carson Sink near Fallon.

Kingsbury Grade closed for construction, Lake Tahoe travelers rerouted to Highway 50 over Spooner

Beginning today, May 1, travelers and commuters looking to get to South Shore Lake Tahoe will need to take Highway 50 over Spooner Summit instead of State Route 207 over Kingsbury Grade.

The road is closed now through May 23 as part of a $15 million road paving and reconstruction project directed by the Nevada Department of Transportation.

2014 Carson City Historic Preservation Scavenger Hunt begins today

In celebration of Historic Preservation Month, the Carson City Historic Resources Commission is holding its 5th annual Historic Preservation Scavenger Hunt beginning today, Thursday, May 1, through May 28, 2014.

The adult scavenger hunt will consist of 30 historic architectural features, all within in the historic district, and the kids scavenger hunt will consist of 20 historic features within a smaller area. The contest will run from May 1 to May 28.

No Quick Fix for Nevada Health Exchange

CARSON CITY, Nev. — There is no quick fix for Nevada's troubled health insurance exchange, but speedy action by state officials on whatever course they decide to pursue is needed to prepare for the next open enrollment period this fall.
