2014 Nevada Special Olympics celebrates competition

Mathew Bailey of Carson City couldn't help but smile as he finished in ninth place in the 100-meter dash at the 2014 Special Olympics Nevada Summer Games in Reno.

"My mom is here and she's up on the bleachers," said Bailey, 23. "Anyways, I dedicated this race to my mom."

Carson City firefighters respond to SUV crash in Combs Canyon

Carson City firefighters responded tonight to an accident in Combs Canyon. At around 8:10 p.m. dispatch received a call from a resident on Combs Circle who said that he heard a vehicle crash within the canyon and then saw smoke.

Carson High Says Goodbye To the Class of 2014

There were just over 450 students who made their way to Carson High School’s football field for one last time Saturday in Carson City. The academic limelight shined on valedictorian Tony Xi, and the two salutatorians: Zoey Gray and Greta Strum, but the rest of the class of 2014 was sure they would not to be forgotten either.

The academics were outstanding with in the rest of the class as well, including over 30 academic presidential level recipients, and more than $2.5 million in scholarships.

Weather system arriving Monday likely to produce thunderstorms, lightning strikes

An approaching low pressure system has the potential to produce thunderstorms Monday through Wednesday with gusty outflow winds, small hail and isolated dry lightning strikes possible, according to the National Weather Service.

The storms will move in from the Sierra by early Monday afternoon and then shift east of Reno and Carson City by late afternoon. Breezy west winds will develop across western Nevada by Monday afternoon.

Carson City woman jailed after allegedly stabbing man in neck while he was showering

A Carson City woman was jailed Saturday morning after she allegedly stabbed a man in the back of the neck while he was showering, a Carson City Sheriff's Office deputy said.

Pamela Joslin, 44, was arrested in Carson City after a nearly two-hour search by law officers. She faces a felony charge of battery with a deadly weapon and is being held in Carson City Jail on $30,000 bail. The victim was taken to Renown Medical Center in Reno with non-life threatening injuries.

Carson High Class of 2014 told to 'Create something magnificent for yourselves'

Mikaela Jackson, 17, wore a beaded necklace with her graduation gown Saturday in honor of her Paiute and Miwok heritage.
“I wanted to represent my tribes and Native Americans,” she said. “It’s a big deal for me. Some of my family didn’t get to graduate themselves.”

Gov. Brian Sandoval isn’t sold on allowing Nevada to become the first state to permit betting on the presidential and other federal elections.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through June 8

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of June 2-8, 2014. The following roads will experience paving/slurry seal operations on Thursday, June 5, and Friday, June 6, as part of the Carson City Freeway project, according to Carson City Public Works.

Operations will be a half road width at a time with accommodations provided for local traffic only. Affected areas are:

Restaurant inspections are made weekly by the Carson City Health and Human Services Environmental Health Division.


Inspections through May 29, 2014 include restaurants, fast food restaurants, grocers and convenience stores. There are 15 inspections in this report. Of the inspections 9 were given scores of 100, for AA ratings. See the full report below.

Public safety: School's out and that means more children on bicycles and in crosswalks

Now that the weather has warmed, there are more pedestrians and bicyclist out on and alongside Carson City roadways. Drivers should be paying special attention to the crosswalks as you approach.
