Carson City Salvation Army kicks off Red Kettle campaign

Continuing its 122-year national tradition, Salvation Army of Carson City launched its Red Kettle fundraising campaign Monday with bells ringing at 15 local retailers, said Carson City Corps Lt. Mark Cyr. Another 10 sites will be added by the end of this week to make a total of 25 Red Kettle bell ringers.

Carson City fire and ambulance respond to three accidents

The Carson City Fire Department responded Tuesday night to three accidents, two in the southbound lane of Carson Street and Old Clear Creek Road, reported at 5:23 p.m. with one being a chain-reaction rear-ender.

A third vehicle accident was reported at 5:27 p.m. at the intersection of Carson and Robinson streets. Paramedics were called to the scene because one of those involved in the accident is 34 weeks pregnant, according to dispatchers. She wasn't injured but it was requested she be checked out.

Christmas in the Sierra Concert

“Christmas in the Sierra Concert, featuring David John and the Comstock Cowboys with special guest Molly Malone, returns to the Historic Genoa Town Hall on Saturday, December 14th. There will be performances at 5 pm and 8 pm. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. There will also be a No Host Bar inside the Town Hall. Each ticket holder can receive 10% off of dinner purchased at Genoa restaurants including Genoa Station Bar and Grille, the Genoa Country Store and Tombstone Tap & Grill up until 5 pm. A ticket must be presented for the dinner discount!

Carson City restaurant and food inspection report for week ending Nov. 22

Restaurant inspections are made weekly by the Carson City Health and Human Services Environmental Health Division. Inspections for the week ending Nov. 22 include a convenience and liquor store, restaurants, fast food restaurants; a super center deli and meat department and the food facility at the Carson City juvenile detention kitchen.

Trio allegedly squatting in campers on private property face drug-related charges

A 25-year-old Carson City was arrested Nov. 24, 11:01 p.m. He faces felony warrant charges of domestic battery and failure to appear out of Del Norte Superior Court in California. Daniel Glenn is being held on $35,000. He was stopped doing 50 in a 35 mph zone while traveling northbound on Lompa Lane.

In other felony arrests:
A 49-year-old Carson City man faces a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance and three misdemeanor charges. James Henry Minor Jr. was arrested Nov. 22, 5:38 p.m. in the 1500 block of Airport Road.

Couple jailed on gross misdemeanor child endangerment charges

A 27-year-old Carson City woman faces a gross misdemeanor charge of child endangerment after being arrested Nov. 22, 4:37 p.m. in the 800 block of North Carson Street. Her 29-year-old boyfriend also faces gross misdemeanor child endangerment charges.

According an arrest report by the Carson City Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to the location after a report of two men fighting and threatening to throw each other off of a two-story balcony. Officers arrived and met with a woman holding her 22-day-old son.

Bently Biofuels and The Western Sustainability Pollution and Prevention Network are teaming to provide collection sites around the region so that residents have an environmentally safe way to get rid of cooking oil used to deep fry their holiday turkeys.

During the holiday season the two organizations are reaching out to the Carson City, Carson Valley, Reno and Lake Tahoe communities to encourage recycling of cooking oil used at homes throughout the region. Collection bins will be placed in various locations throughout the community from Thanksgiving until New Year’s Eve.

Winning essays on American citizenship to be recognized by Carson City school board Tuesday

Several students from the Carson City School District will be recognized Tuesday for their submissions to the 2013-2014 American Citizen Essay Contest.
The students will be honored beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center.

Among the winners are Vidhi Pandit, a 5th grader at Bordewich Bray Elementary School. She submitted the winning elementary school essay below that was passed to Carson Now by her proud parents, Girish and Dr. Su Pandit of Carson City.

Response to: Playing politics is not good for Carson City business climate

Mr. Abowd, I would like to clarify the vote last Thursday that you mentioned. The board passed the measure with a majority vote of 3-2. However, the Mayor instructed city staff to disregard our vote. I suggest you contact the Mayor for further clarification on his decision to override this majority vote.

'Holiday with a Hero' needs contributions to aid Carson City area homeless children

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office, the Carson City School District, the Department of Public Safety, the Department of Corrections and the Uniformed First Responders from across the Carson Valley will collaborate to make Christmas come true for students within the Carson City School District.
