Flash flood warning issued for Carson City area

A flash flood warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for Carson City and south central Washoe County until 8 p.m. Tuesday night.

The weather service Doppler radar shows flash flooding from a thunderstorm on the east side of Washoe Lake. This storm was producing rainfall of 1 to 2 inches per hour and is likely producing flash flooding for areas east of Washoe Lake and was said to be moving north of the Carson City Airport.

National Weather Service activates alert system for smart phones

The National Weather Service in Reno has implemented a weather text alert system for smart phones. A number of Carson Now readers have said they've gotten text message alerts already, the first being a dust storm from Monday. Here's the skinny:

Multiple lightning-sparked fires in Northern Nevada

Crews are responding to at least three lightning-sparked fires in Douglas County. The fires are located off Leviathan Mine Road and in the Pinenut Mountains at the Sunrise Pass and Mount Segal areas, according to U.S. Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Lisa Ross. There is no estimate to the fires’ size. No structures are immediately threatened.

Comstock Casino in Carson City robbed at gunpoint Tuesday

UPDATE: The Comstock Casino in Carson City was robbed at gunpoint early Tuesday morning, the Carson City Sheriff's Office reports.

The robbery happened at 2:50 a.m. when an unknown man approached the cashier area of the Goni Road casino, said Carson City Sheriff's Office Detective Doug Speegle. The man showed the clerk a large dark pistol, demanded money and then left with a large amount of cash.

‘Grow Your Own, Nevada!’ classes return to cooperative extension offices

Nevadans can learn to grow safe, fresh, organic produce at home and in school and community gardens without spending a lot of money.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension will help show residents how during eight “Grow Your Own, Nevada!” gardening classes featuring “back-to-basics” best practices for producing bountiful harvests. Classes will be presented Mondays, 2:30 – 4:30 p.m., July 8 – Aug. 26, live in Reno and video-conferenced to Extension offices throughout the state, including those in Carson City, Gardnerville, Fallon and Yerington.
