Carson City School District honors retiring employees
Submitted by Molly Moser on Fri, 05/25/2012 - 1:35pmRetiring teachers and staff of the Carson City School District were celebrated for their accomplishments during the Carson City School District Board meeting at the Community Center on Tuesday, May 22.
A total of 13 staff members from Carson City schools were granted a clock award by Associate Superintendent of Human Resources Jose Delfin. Most of the staff that received the awards had worked for the school district for at least a decade. George Rolin, a custodian of Fremont Elementary School for more than 20 years, expressed his gratefulness when he received his award.
Crime Log: Carson City man arrested for assault

Carson City Sheriff's deputies have made the following arrests based on felony or gross misdemeanor allegations:
- David Stone, 57, a Carson City man, at around 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Stone was arrested for battery with a deadly weapon and a misdemeanor allegation of domestic battery. Bail is set at $33,000 plus administrative fees.

June 9, 2012 - 11:15am The Carson City Democratic Women's Club Meeting will be meeting Saturday June 9, at Grandma Hatties Restaurant. Lunch may be ordered off the menu between 11:15 Am and noon. Or persons may come at noon for just the program.
At noon, the program begins with a presentation from Janice Ayres of RSVP who will speak on "What's Up With Social Security and medicare and How RSVP Has Been Affected by the Economy and Congress".
Candidates For State Education Board Seat Bring Diverse Backgrounds To Race

One of the four seats, District 2 which mirrors the new Nevada 2nd Congressional District from Reno and Carson City east across rural Nevada, has attracted five candidates, two of whom are serving now on the 10-member elected board. The race is nonpartisan.

U.S. Bank partners with Junior Achievement to bring day-long program to all students at Jacks Valley Elementary School
WHAT: All students at Jacks Valley Elementary School will participate in “JA in a Day” presented by Junior Achievement of Northern Nevada and U.S. Bank. Students will be taught curriculum based on financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work readiness from U.S. Bank, Douglas County Sherriff’s Department and parent volunteers.

The CarsonNow.org Pink Diamonds brought their season record to 9-3 with a decisive win over the HDR Killer Kiwis 23-11 in Carson Girls U10 softball action at Edmonds Park on Tuesday.
The pitchers for the Killer Kiwis were: Mackenzie Nolan - 10 runs, 4 hits, 12 walks, 1 strike out; and, Destinae Ordaz – 13 runs, 4 hits, 14 walks, 1 strike out. Pitching for the Pink Diamonds: Kelley Barr – 5 runs, 3 hits, 4 walks, 1 strike out; Lexi Fox – 5 runs, no hits, 7 walks, 2 strike outs; and, Tezia Boice – 1 run, no hits, 6 walks, 5 strike outs.
BLM Carson City urges public awareness of extreme wildfire danger
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 05/24/2012 - 5:06pmExtremely dry conditions has prompted the Bureau of Land Management Carson City District to urge cities, counties and residents to be aware of the increased chance of wildfire due to extreme dry conditions and warmer temperatures.
“The current conditions for this time of the year are dryer than what we have seen in the last 20 years," said Ken Smihula, fire management officer. “The public needs to be aware of the dry conditions and the very high risk of wildfire. We encourage everyone using public lands to be careful in regards to human-caused fires and take appropriate steps to prevent them.”
TRE Fire in southern Douglas County grows to 7,500 acres, 15 percent contained
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 05/24/2012 - 2:55pmThe TRE Fire burning in south Douglas County has grown to 7,500 acres, and is 15 percent contained, officials report Thursday.
The fire continues to burn in the hills to the north and east of the Topaz Ranch Estates residential area. Two homes and 17 structures were destroyed. No additional homes or structures have burned or are in immediate threat. The area in and around the fire is under a red flag warning to 11 p.m. Thursday due to high winds and relatively low humidity.
Memorial Saturday in Silver City for legendary broadcaster, hellraiser and satirist Travus T. Hipp

Services for legendary radio commentator Travus T. Hipp will be held this Saturday, May 26, in Silver City. Hipp died early Friday morning, May 18, at his Silver City home. He was 75, as old as the Golden Gate Bridge in his beloved San Francisco.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 26, in Silver City. Gathering, gnoshing and remembering will begin at the Silver City Community Center, 385 High Street, at 10:00 a.m. Food and refreshments will be provided. Those who wish may bring more.
