24-hour ride in Carson City cycles in donations of more than $1,000 for Boys and Girls Club

Indoor cyclists burned at least 2,000 calories and rode about 50 miles within the first 20 minutes at Life Cycle Elite Spin Studio's 24-hour community ride Friday.

The event was organized by Jill Larson, who coordinated with the Boys and Girls Club of Northern Nevada and the Healthy Habits Program.

Also organizing the event was Shane Trotter and his wife, Nikki Trotter. The Trotters purchased the facility from Larson last month and this event was like a kick-off to their grand opening, said Nikki.

"We're kind of those people who like to give back," said Nikki. "We're also kind of killing a few birds with this one event."

Nikki said Shane is training to participate in the Silver State 508 in September. The Silver State 508 is a 48-hour, 508-mile race beginning and finishing in Reno.

Much of the route spans across the Northern Nevada stretch of U.S. Highway 50, known famously as the "The Loneliest Road in America."

For cyclists the world over, it is also described as one of the toughest riding challenges in the sport, enduring mountain climbs, stark deserts and desolate roads.

"So we're monitoring how he does here, while bringing the community together for this charity event," said Nikki.

Shane is riding solo for the 24-hour event which began at 2 p.m. Friday and ends at 2 p.m. today. The other nine teams have four riders each, who will switch off like a relay throughout the event.

Nikki said the event raised more than $1,000 and people were still donating as they came in to join the event Friday.

"Every penny will be donated to the Boys and Girls Club in support of the Healthy Habits Program," said Nikki.

The fundraiser is to support the Healthy Habits program offered through the Boys and Girls Club of Northern Nevada. The program is committed to ensuring every child has access to good nutrition, personal hygiene, physical fitness and team-building activities.

"One of the things we want to do is get cycling back out there for every age, but starting with the children and through the Healthy Habits Program and getting the information out there," said Nikki.

Nikki said the indoor cycling facility encourages riders of all ages and levels to come in and learn more.

"The environment here is incredible," she said. "Everyone is always pumped and encouraging."
