Events around Carson City for Tuesday, March 10

Heading into Tuesday, sunny skies and more springlike weather are ahead before active weather patterns start up again later in the week. Activities lined up around the capital city include morning and evening walks hosted by Muscle Powered. You can join true crime, paranormal writer Janice Oberding at Nevada State Library and Archives for a brown bag luncheon. There's a meeting of the Carson Fly Fishing Club at the sheriff's office, a paint and sip night at Living the Good Life and you can join Mile High Jazz Band at Comma Coffee for a 'Fate & Fortune' evening of music and poetry. — Muscle Powered hosts Tuesday morning walk at Silver Saddle Ranch. 9 a.m. Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. The March 10 morning walk will be at Silver Saddle Ranch to Mexican Dam. Meet near the red barns on Silver Saddle Ranch on Carson River Road. Dirt trail. From Carson River Road turn into the dirt road by Silver Saddle Ranch sign. Follow the signs on the one way road to parking lot. Morning walks start at 9 AM and are 1 to 2 miles with duration of 1 hour with usually negligible elevation gain, and frequently on paved or smooth paths. — Capital City Arts Initiative to present 'Impact' exhibition featuring Lake Tahoe artist Paula Chung. Daily through May 28. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition "Impact" by artist Paula Chung at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery in Carson City. The exhibition will be in the gallery through May 28, 2020. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Paula Chung’s Impact works address violence on sports fields, battlefields, and the streets. Through the use of medical imagery, she illustrates how violence affects us all.

— Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'Photo Finished 2020' exhibition. Daily. The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, Photo Finished 2020, at the Community Development Building, the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Nine students from Carson High School’s Advanced Photography program have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public through March 26, 2020, Mondays - Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. The Carson High students include Jackie Garza, Ansley Griffin, Karla Herrera, Meagan Kiesow, Kayee Konze, Kailee Luschar, Vanessa Martinez, Haley Trost, and Valerie Wamsley. The artists are all students in Kara Ferrin’s Advanced Photography class.

— Nevada Artists Association Judged Winter Show to run through March 27. 10 a.m. Nevada Artists Association presents the Winter Show. This is a judged show presenting a wide array of entries from Northern Nevada artists. This show runs through March 27. The Gallery is located at 449 W. King Street in Carson City and is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. everyday, except Monday. — True crime, paranormal writer Janice Oberding featured speaker at Nevada State Library and Archives luncheon. Noon. Local author, Janice Oberding, will be the featured speaker for the March Nevada in Small Bites brown bag lunch. While the likes of Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly may have disagreed, Janice feels fortunate to have done this not once, but three times. In fact, one of the more intriguing TV shows she has worked with remains the Ghost Hunters (Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson) Alcatraz episode in which she was invited to accompany the team to the island. Although her part was cut from the episode, she was credited and thanked as a consultant and historian. She has also worked with the Syfy channel, the History channel, Living TV and the Travel Channel. This talk will be held in the Nevada State Library and Archives Building, Suite 110, from noon to 1 p.m. on March 10, 2020. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch, and light refreshments will be served. The “Nevada in Small Bites” book talk series is held on the second Tuesday of each month. Join us for lunchtime conversations, guest authors, and historians and learn a bit more about of Nevada's history, literature, and community. Open to everyone.

— The Carson City Toastmasters meet Tuesdays. Noon at the Black Bear Diner, Max Casino in the Atrium in the back, to the right after entering Black Bear. Max Casino is located at 900 S Carson St Carson City. Membership Restriction: None; the club is open to all interested parties.

Meet at the Korean Memorial parking area at the east end of 5th Street, 600 Marsh Road. Flashlight required. We will walk in the neighborhood near Riverview Park. Tuesday evening hikes start at 5:30 PM and are usually 1 1/2 hours or more duration and are 4-6 miles in length. Water, closed-toed shoes, and a headlamp/flashlight are required. Hat and poles recommended. If weather conditions are bad hikes will be cancelled.

— Pilates mat classes offered at the Brewery Arts Center. 5:30 p.m. If you are looking to strengthen your abdomen, hips, legs, arms, as well as maintain good posture, then Pilates is for you! You’ll get stronger with more sculpted muscles and gain flexibility which can give you a better sense of well being all around. — Parents of Addicted Loved Ones hold meetings Tuesday evenings. 6 p.m. PAL provides education and support, at no cost, for family members (over 18) trying to save a son, daughter or family member from addiction to alcohol or drugs. By attending our meetings on Tuesdays, 6 p.m. at Partnership Carson City office at 1925 N Carson City St., you will give and receive support from others who are facing the same challenges you are.

— Empty Bowls, Open Studio. 6 to 8:30 p.m. Create an empty bowl to donate to charity, instruction will be offered to create and paint a bowl or create something on our own during open studio session. Open studio time at Ogres-Holm Pottery is free of charge and open to the public. 1215 South Carson Street.

— Swing Dance lessons at Yaple's Ballroom. 6 p.m. Looking for a date night idea? Want a night out with the friends! Grab the family and Swing on by Yaple's Ballroom! Come to our Swing Dancing Class. It is the best! It's great physical activity, great music, an easy going style that can help you connect with a partner easily. This is also a great style if you don't have a partner. When you come to class, single guys and gals rotate so that they get a chance to try the swing moves with a partner. — Hear the latest local fish stories at the March Carson Fly Fishing Club meeting. 6:30 p.m. The Carson Fly Fishing Club will meet March 10, 6:30 p.m. in the Ormsby Room of the Carson City Sheriff's Office. Monthly meeting of the Carson Fly Fishing Club are held at the CCSO Ormsby Room. Come to our club gathering and meet fellow fishing enthusiasts; listen and learn from guest speakers; enjoy a chance to win a fun prize in the raffle; hear the latest fishing stories, and much more. This meeting will have a free drawing for all in attendance. Enter through the sheriff's office west side door to get to the Ormsby Room, 911 East Musser Street.

— Mile High Jazz Band presents 'Fate & Fortune' music, poetry March 10 at Carson City's Comma Coffee. 7:30 p.m. The Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Jakki Ford will be joined by several poets and readers on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., for an evening of big-band music and poetry on the theme "Fate & Fortune." Each poem will be followed by a related big-band tune. The event will be at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, across the street from the state legislature building in Carson City. Admission is $5 at the door and free for age 18 and under. The program will feature Rita Geil, Wayne Carlson, Jakki Ford, Krista Lukas, Susan Sara Priest, Timothy Rhodes, Amy Roby, and Tina Wylie reading their original poems and selected works by other published poets. “Fate & Fortune” includes humorous and serious selections to entertain people of all ages. Mile High Jazz Band performances are funded, in part, by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, and by private donations.
