I Love Carson City's Weekend Event Summary: Jan. 14 - 15
The snow has finally stopped falling and now it’s time to go play in it. What’s on your weekend fun list: snowmen and skiing or a toasty fire with a good book? If you need some help deciding, check out my list below. You’ll find great live music, including some special concerts at the Brewery Arts Center, karaoke for those over 21, and the opening weekend performances of ‘The Lion King, Jr.’ Keep reading and go have some fun.
SATURDAY:
- Seniors (55+), Military, and Veterans Swim Free at Paradise Salon and Spa: 3430 Executive Pointe, off College Pkwy (7am-5pm, except during scheduled classes approx. 9am-11am; indoor adult warm saltwater pools, no reservation required)
- Free Youth Basketball Handling Clinic at the MAC: 1870 Russell Way (7:30am-8:30am; open to all youth aged 6-18; sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club)
- Bob McFadden Estate Sale at the Historic Krebs Peterson Mansion: 500 Mountain St. (8am-4pm; featuring art, Nevada memorabilia, and collectibles curated by the late Bob McFadden; All art and furniture has been professionally appraised.)
- Coffee and Donuts with EAA Sierra Chapter 403 at 2500 E. College Pkwy (8:30am-12pm, all welcome)
- Breakfast and Bowl at Carson Lanes (9am-12pm; breakfast and unlimited bowling until noon
- New Year’s Art Show and ’Road to the Future’ Exhibit in the Nevada Artists Association Gallery at the Brewery Arts Center (10am-4pm)
- Arlington Square Ice Rink (WEATHER PERMITTING; Sessions 10am-1pm, 2pm-5pm, 6pm-9pm; $7/$5 kids, $3 Skate Rental)
Paradise Salon Spa Wellness is offering a relaxing time in their saltwater pools today. No reservation is necessary and it’s free for seniors, as well as military and veterans. The Carson Hot Springs offer private spa rooms and an outdoor pool that’s naturally nice and hot.
- Auditions for Wild Horse Children’s Theater’s ‘Annie, Jr.’ at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall (10am-1pm; open to kids 5-15; MUST HAVE APPOINTMENT to audition, 775-887-0438 or email pat@wildhorsetheater.com to schedule)
- Movie Morning: The Magnificent Seven at the Minden Library: 1625 Library Lane, Minden (10:30am; Free coffee and donuts will be provided; Rated PG-13, this movie is geared toward teens and adults)
- WARF Cat and Kitten Adoption Event at Petco on Topsy Lane (11am-4pm; all cats are fixed, vaccinated and micro-chipped)
- Open House at Wolf Den Martial Arts Academy: 1204 N. Carson St. (11am-3pm)
- Artist Reception and Awards Presentation for the ‘Road to the Future’ Exhibit at the Nevada Artists Association Gallery in the Brewery Arts Center (Artist Reception 1pm-4pm; all welcome)
The Brewery Arts Center features an Artisan Shoppe, a Black Box Theater, Performance Hall, and room for classes. It’s also home to the Nevada Artists Association Gallery. Join them for a reception this afternoon that will celebrate the winners of their newest exhibit ‘Road to the Future’ featuring artwork celebrating downtown Carson City.
- Youth Theater Carson City presents Disney’s ‘The Lion King, Jr’ at the Bob Boldrick Theater in the Community Center (2pm; $12 general admission, $10 seniors/students)
- Alissa Vickers Memorial Volleyball Tournament at Dayton High School (4pm-8pm; $20 for teams of 8-10, $2 spectator fee)
- Live Music with Catfish Carl at 1862 David Walley's Restaurant and Saloon in Genoa (5pm-9pm)
- Lecture: "How the World Will End" by Mike Thomas and Star Party at Western Nevada College’s Observatory: 2699 Van Patten Ave (6pm-10:30pm; lecture at 6:30pm, limited seating; free, star viewing by telescopes begins at sunset; no viewing if it is snowing and/or there is snow on the roads)
- Rock N Bowl at the Gold Dust West Bowling Center (6pm-10pm)
- Live Music with GHI Jazz at Living the Good Life: 1480 N. Carson (6pm-8:30pm; sit-ins welcome)
- Live Music with Brian Lester at J’s Old Town Bistro, Dayton (6pm; Reservations recommended 775-246-4400)

Add ‘The Fire’ to all this ice. The Celtic Music Series continues at the Brewery Arts Center with a high energy Scottish Band with masterful fiddle and bagpipe playing. Tickets are available online HERE or at the door.

Wintery Sundays are almost asking for hot chocolate and ice skating. Head down to Carson Lanes for their Bowling ‘Golf’ Tournament and see how well you can maneuver 18 lanes with varying oil patterns. Classic movie lovers are in for a treat as Galaxy Theater offers two viewings of the 1952 favorite, ‘Singing in the Rain.’ Grab some friends or your special someone for ‘Bostyx’ featuring David Victor formerly of Boston. You’ll find this great concert in the Performance Hall at the Brewery Arts Center.
SUNDAY:
- Muscle Powered Weekly Bike Ride - Meet in the south parking lot of Fremont Elementary School, next to the Linear Ditch Trail (meet at 9am; consists of two loops 10-15 miles long each, this will allow a rider to do 10-15 miles or 20-30 miles; ride pace will vary depending on rider level, but usually about 12-16 mph; All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, helmet, and closed toed shoes. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to the meeting site; email Shane shane@shanetrotter.net with any questions)
