The Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed that the plane crash in Truckee Monday afternoon killed four people. The plane was carrying a flight crew of two and two passengers. The names of the dead have not been released.

A 44-year-old man was arrested Monday for a felony fugitive from justice warrant and suspicion of misdemeanor battery, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

The U.S. Forest Service reports significant progress was made over the weekend fighting the 67,764-acre Tamarack Fire south of Gardnerville, reaching 45 percent containment, with evacuations being lifted for many residents and the opening of two highways.

A 25-year-old woman was arrested Friday for suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after a witness provided deputies video of the woman allegedly pointing a handgun at the victim, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

As the job market continues to be the subject of daily concern with the current Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation report showing almost 130,000 statewide on unemployment rolls, this is a good time to remind Carson City residents that most jobs here are not within the hospitality, retail industry and there are many good paying jobs that continued uninterrupted despite the pandemic.

Widespread thick smoke, mainly from the Dixie Fire, will continue to cause poor air quality around the Carson City region Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Space exploration activities in Silver City on July 27

SILVER CITY — Parents and their children ages 8 to 12 are invited to come up to the Comstock town of Silver City for fun activities focusing on Space Exploration Science and NASA. Evacuations for the Topaz Ranch Estates and Topaz Lake are lifted as of 2 p.m. on Sunday. Residents are allowed to return to their homes, according to Douglas County officials in a news release. Non-mandatory evacuations remain in place for the Holbrook Junction/Highlands area and Spring Valley areas.

My friend Kate asked me to come by and look at her bridal wreath spireas today. These plants are lush, green and over five feet tall; Kate was wondering how to prune them. She wants them to bloom more. The plants are under the eaves of the house, some facing south, and others facing west, all in filtered light from pines.

SMITH — Lyon County officials have been authorized by the Tamarack Incident Management Team that the warning to evacuate in Smith Valley can be rescinded.

Wildfire smoke continues to fill the lower valleys and Sierra on Sunday, bringing poor air quality to the region. Air quality due to the Tamarack, Dixie, Fly, and Bootleg wildfires burning in the region has caused another spike in the Air Quality Index, with readings in the "unhealthy category" and "very unhealthy" range from Gardnerville to Reno, according to AirNow.gov.

Firefighting efforts on the Tamarack Fire over the weekend have shown significant improvements with the U.S. Forest Service reporting 27 percent containment as of Sunday morning.

In the summer months, both bears and humans are active in the Lake Tahoe Basin, which means there is a lot to think about when living, visiting, or recreating in the area this time of year.

In the middle of July, The Pine Nut Mountains Trail Association a Douglas County, Nev., based nonprofit group, in partnership with the Nevada Offroad Association, completed a trail stewardship day at the historic Pine Grove town site in Lyon County, Nev.

RENO — Hot August Nights, the week-long celebration dedicated to classic cars and classic music, returns for its 34th year starting July 30, 2021. Picking up from the 2020 postponement, since 1986 thousands of classic cars and car lovers from near and far descend on the Reno-Tahoe region to participate in one of the largest annual classic car events in the world.

MINDEN — Douglas County is currently conducting preliminary exterior damage assessments of structures including homes, outbuildings, wellhouses and barns in areas where fire activity has been observed. All evacuations for Douglas County remain in place and 395 remains closed for public safety concerns.

The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "#SueñoAmericano", by Lauren Cardenas at Western Nevada College’s Bristlecone Gallery, 2201 W College Parkway, Carson City. The exhibition will be in the gallery from

Capital City Hoops is hosting the third annual ‘Back 2 School’ basketball camp next week on Monday, Aug. 2 through Thursday, Aug. 5 from 9 a.m. to noon at the MAC Facility.

Organized by Carson High School varsity basketball coach Jordan Glover, the camp welcomes boys and girls, ages 5-14 to participate.

Only 60 spots are available, however players won’t be turned away. The camp cost is 90 dollars for CC Hoops’ members and 110 dollars for non-members.

UPDATE 2:22PM: Alpine County Sheriff's have removed mandatory evacuations for the area of Mesa Vista, according to Tamarack Fire Information.

Residents must have proof of residence to bypass the road closure. SR 88 will remain closed to non-residents. Additional evacuations are possible due to fire activity, said the Alpine County news release.

For ten years, The Mike Tice Foundation has brought donors from across the country to the Carson Valley in support of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada. This past weekend, July 15-17, the event was back to raise critical funds for the youth of Carson Valley.

The Charity Weekend “For the Kids” included a football clinic with Coach Tice & Friends at the Carson Valley Boys & Girls Club. Ray and Brenda Robertson of Carson Valley provided shoes for nearly 100 kids in the clinic, and Chicago Mike’s provided food for the day.

Today, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak declared a state of emergency in Douglas County in response to the ongoing Tamarack Fire.

Declaring a state of emergency ensures resources from the local, state, and federal levels are available to assist as needed during this emergency.
