New Monument on Horizons for Capitol Complex
A memorial dedicated to Nevada’s fallen soldiers could be the next monument in Carson City’s Capitol Complex with the passing of Senate Bill 230 by the Committee on Natural Resources.
The American Legion, the largest veteran’s service organization in the state, is acting as the lead organization in completing the project and needs approval to use state grounds.
Originally Gold Star Families, a smaller organization was going to spearhead the project. Thursday's "amend and do pass" allowed The American Legion to take the reigns.
John Warden, the Department Commander of the American Legion gave the reason for the shift in leadership.
“[Gold Star Families is] a much smaller organization, and we have more of a structure to put something like this together,” Warden said.
The Senate passed the bill Thursday, but SB 230 still has to get approved by the Assembly before any further actions can take place. Warden said today was just a start.
“Once we get approval, we’ll move ahead and establish a 501(c)(3) [a charitable organization], and we will go from there,” Warden said.
