Expedition Man Endurance Festival comes to Northern Nevada

Coming from as far as Australia and as near as North Lake Tahoe, more than 200 men and women athletes are gearing up for a race to remember at Northern Nevada’s inaugural Expedition Man Endurance Festival and Ultra-Distance-Triathlon, taking place Saturday, August 25. Athletes will begin with a swim at Zephyr Cove Resort at Lake Tahoe, then onto a more than 100-mile-bike-ride through Carson City and a long-run along the Truckee River, ending at the Legends at Sparks Marina.

Carson City Library Summer Reading Program

July 4 at Lake Tahoe means no fireworks allowed, holiday booze ban at Nevada and Zephyr Cove beaches

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit reminds residents and visitors to help protect public safety and our environment during the Fourth of July holiday.
Keep wildfire prevention in mind during Fourth of July celebrations. Possession of fireworks of any kind, including sparklers, is illegal in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Crime Log: Carson City trio arrested for heroin, other charges

Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested the following individuals for felony allegations:

  • Ashley Ore-Larson, 18, a Carson City woman, for conspiracy to violation the controlled substances act and possession of heroin. Ore-Larson was also arrested for misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail has been set at $18,500 plus administrative fees. At the same incident, officers arrested two more people for felony allegations:

Douglas County Justice of Peace: No additional judge needed in East Fork Court

The caseload at the East Fork Township in Douglas County does not require an additional judge at this time, Justice of the Peace Tom Perkins has decided.
The announcement was made public in a news release sent Monday.
State law requires that an additional judge be added to the township when it reaches 34,000 in population. According to Nevada's demographer, the population of East Fork Township is 39,907. In a letter written to the Legislative Counsel Bureau, Judge Perkins said:

Forest Service, ARAMARK removing Zephyr Cove Resort fuel tanks

South Lake Tahoe, Calif. – The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management is working with permit-holder ARAMARK Parks and Destinations to pull three underground fuel storage tanks and remove contaminated soil at Zephyr Cove Resort. Zephyr Cove Resort is open for business as usual. The work will be visible to the highway and to resort visitors.

With the Opening Day of the 2011 California fishing season right around the corner on April 30, if you are planning to fish, you need to be aware that you will need to possess one or more of the following to be legal:
— The 2011 non-resident annual fishing license is $116.90, and it is good through Dec. 31, 2011.
— A one-day resident or non-resident license is $14.04.
— A two-day resident or non-resident license is $21.86.
— A 10-day non-resident license is $43.46.

McCall Realty gives Tahoe youth a fighting chance

In 2010, McCall Realty of South Lake Tahoe pledged to donate $20,000 of annual profits to five non-profit organizations benefitting the youth of South Shore. Owner Thane McCall is fulfilling that promise by delivering final contributions to the South Lake Tahoe Police Activities League (PAL), which will use the funds for after-school programs including a boxing club, bike club, recreation outing group and various sports teams.

Lake Tahoe kicks off first stages of Amgen Tour of California

Organizers of the the 2011 Amgen Tour of California, the largest cycling event in North America, announced today the Stage 1 and Stage 2 race routes for Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe’s first-ever involvement in the race as the official Overall Start is Sunday, May 15 and begins at South Lake Tahoe at 6,300 feet, the highest start elevation in the six-year history of the competition. Stage 1 wraps up in North Lake Tahoe at Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort, with the Stage 2 Start taking place nearby at Squaw Valley USA on Monday, May 16.

American Century, LIVESTRONG deliver to South Tahoe nonprofits

Nineteen South Lake Tahoe area non-profit organizations got an early holiday surprise Thursday when more than $100,000 was delivered by LIVESTRONG and the American Century Championship.
