What is Common Core (CC) and why should you care?

Its proponents say CC is merely a set of standards for kindergarten through twelfth-grade education developed by disinterested and public-spirited experts at the request of the nation’s governors and state school superintendents.

The Nell J. Redfield Foundation has pledged $2 million in support of the William N. Pennington Student Achievement Center at the University of Nevada, Reno, a 78,000 square-foot building that will unite a myriad of student services now scattered across campus. It will connect students to dedicated and convenient services to support their academic success and timely graduation, as well as foster diversity, student engagement and student success.

Four Nevada legislative candidates who hope to represent Carson City took to the microphone Wednesday night at the Carson City Chamber of Commerce candidate forum.

Each touted their qualifications, noting their conservative credentials and their commitment as Republicans to tackle a legislative body dominated by southern Nevada Democrats.

The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation and Golden Corral recently presented the James H. Maynard Excellence in Education Award to Penny Reynolds of Carson High School in Carson City and Cecilia Stec of Kentlake High School in Washington State.

Public concerns over Nevada’s super-data system – which will soon track every public school student from pre-kindergarten to college and into the workforce – has prompted the Nevada Department of Education to invite public input on its proposed policies for securing student information and regulating who has access to it.

From the Carson City Library on April 14 at 6 p.m. a group of six engineers are slated to cut the grand opening ribbon on a traveling exhibit supported by the National Science Foundation, titled Discover Tech: Engineers Make a World of Difference.

Nevada State Engineer Mr. Jason King, P.E. as well as five previous Nevada State Engineers who served in the top post starting from 1967 through 2010 will join King to celebrate arrival of the engineering-focused interactive exhibit.

Lyon County, Nevada was the fastest-growing county in the United States prior to the 2008 economic collapse took one of the biggest hits statewide in the foreclosure crisis. The state overall was one of the hardest hit nationally and the housing market is still in recovery.
A glimmer of hope was seen in 2013, as home values headed up while foreclosure rates headed down, according to a report from the Lied Institute for Real Estate Studies at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

After years of cuts and layoffs Lyon County has seen an increase in funding and balanced a budget with no cuts of employees. In the past several years the County has eliminated 120 positions, a 30 percent workforce reduction.

On Saturday April 5 at 11AM there will be a demonstration against Common Core in front of the Legislature Building on Carson Street between 4th and 5th Streets. It s part of a simultaneous multi-state effort.

Employers and job seekers have been connecting this winter and spring through a number of initiatives including job fairs in Carson City, Lake Tahoe, an April 4 event planned in Douglas County and most recently through Nevada JobConnect.

A weeklong job quest campaign in Carson City received 1,047 job openings in a variety of industries from entry level to executive level jobs, well above the goal of 500 job openings set by the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, said DETR Director Frank Woodbeck.

Local businesses and job seekers can look forward to connecting opportunity with talent at the Carson Valley Job Opportunity Fair on April 4, 2014 from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm at the CVIC Hall, 1602 Esmeralda, Minden.

With attendance of 33 employers and agencies at the same event a year ago, an even greater turnout is expected this time around.

A STEM Career Investigation Program, hosted this semester by the University of Nevada, Reno’s Raggio Research Center, is offering Washoe County School District sophomores, juniors and seniors the opportunity to observe current scientific and engineering research being conducted at the University and affiliated institutions.

“The idea behind this program is to offer exposure for students to realize careers in many specialized areas of science and engineering,” Jacque Ewing-Taylor, associate director, Raggio Research Center for STEM Education and institutional grants coordinator, said.

In an effort to put more Nevadans back to work, Nevada JobConnect will host a special campaign in Carson City, Douglas County, and Lyon County to get more employers to list their job openings with the state’s One-Stop Employment Centers.

Nevada JobConnect and the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) Employment Security Division are inviting employers to participate in its second Job Quest campaign being held in Carson City from March 10, 2014 to March 15, 2014.

Carson City area job seekers will have a chance to meet with at least 50 employers Feb. 21 at an employment fair at the community center.

The fair runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. inside the gym area of the Carson City Community Center, 851 East William Street. It is being sponsored by Carson City Health and Human Services, JOIN, Inc. and the Carson City Chamber of Commerce.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Bootstraps Program has received the 2013 Partners in Conservation Award from the U.S. Department of the Interior, one of only 20 programs across the nation to receive this award for achievements in conservation of natural resources that include collaborative activity among a diverse range of entities.

The Nevada Rural Counties Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Inc. (RSVP) has appointed Mike Reynolds as the Carson City and Regional Mobility Manager. Lack of transportation has been identified as the greatest deterrent to accessing lifesaving goods and services for homebound, low income, frail seniors and disabled persons.

Dr. Peter Reed, PhD, will be the featured speaker at the Carson City Chamber of Commerce Soup’s On! Luncheon on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 11:30 a.m. at Gold Dust West. Reed joined the University of Nevada Sanford Center for Aging as Director and Professor of Community Health Services in September 2013.

UPDATE: With extended federal jobless benefits in peril, Carson City workforce employee counselors say hundreds of new jobseekers have begun to hit the streets, resumes in hand, looking for work.

The Nevada Rural Housing Authority has 2013 Workforce Initiative Subsidy for Homeownership funds available to help first-time homebuyers with the necessary down payment to get into a home of their own, but they must be in contract by March 31, 2014.

In Carson City, the income limits are slightly higher and in Lyon and Churchill counties, they are slightly lower. Income limits can be found here.

RENO, Nev. – The FAA has selected the State of Nevada as one of six states designated as a center for the development of unmanned aerial vehicles and outdoor testing of unmanned autonomous systems, Nevada Gov.

Nevada has been picked as one of six locations to be a center for drone development in the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration announced Monday.

As a drone development site, the state would benefit by providing thousands of jobs with an average wage of approximately $62,000; an estimated $2.5 billion in economic impact in present dollars; and an estimated $125 million in annual state and local tax revenue.

RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada School of Medicine and the High Sierra Area Health Education Center announce the release of Health Care Careers in Nevada 2014-2015.

This updated edition of the manual contains a wide range of current information on more than 80 health care occupations in Nevada, including an overview of job requirements, Nevada employment outlook and average salary data in Nevada for each occupation. The guide also provides a detailed inventory of educational certificate and degree programs in Nevada for each type of health care job.

On December 12, 2013 in coordinated efforts with the Carson City School Board and Board of Supervisors, the Library Trustees unanimously adopted Level Up, a strategic plan for learning 2014 – 2019, the library’s next five year plan.

“An educated, skilled citizenry will secure our future. The integration of the strategic plans and the exciting partnerships/collaborations demonstrate that collectively, community leadership gets it. We welcome the challenge and look forward to the possibilities,” said Library Trustee Chairwoman Sandy Foley.

UPDATE: The Carson City Board of Supervisors will meet jointly with the Carson City School Board beginning at 6 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, Nov. 13. From the Community Center’s Sierra Room, located at 851 E. William St., the 12 elected officials will discuss the school district’s strategic plan, Empower Carson City, and meaningful linkages to the City’s initiatives related to education and lifelong learning.

With October designated National Cyber Security Awareness Month, state and federal agencies in Nevada will be recognizing efforts to protect citizens against attacks on computer networks and infrastructure.

The Nevada Division of Emergency Management/Homeland Security, Department of Administration/Enterprise IT Services, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Cyber Security Alliance are all participating to increase awareness throughout the U.S. and, specifically Nevada.

CARSON CITY — Western Nevada College’s Tech Prep Consortium has been recognized nationally for its Career Pathways program.

The National Association for Career Pathways Leadership selected WNC for the 2013 Rigorous Programs of Study National Award for exceeding what other states offer students in career and technical programs. The award recognizes the college’s collaboration with industry and hard work by faculty and staff to provide the essential curriculum and instruction in technology-automated systems, construction, machine tool technology and welding.

With two successful job fairs this year that have sent more than 100 people to work locally, the third Carson City Job Fair will be held Friday, Oct. 4, at the Carson City Community Center. There will be 45 employers on hand to talk to job seekers and to accept resumes.

Hosted by Carson City Health and Human Services, JOIN and The Carson City Chamber of Commerce, the Fall Job Fair will be open to the public from 2 to 5 p.m. it will be held in the large gym area of the community center, 851 E. William Street.
