It’s February already. Days are longer and happily, it will soon be planting time. According to USDA plant hardiness zone map, most of us will be relatively safe planting based on Zone 6b, with temperature lows ranging from minus 5 to 0 degrees F.

Breezy northeast and east winds may result in another round of blowing dust Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. Dust kicked up from nearby dry lake beds may produce localized areas of visibility reduced below 4 miles, including portions of Reno and Carson City.

A strong cold front will blast through the Carson City, Lake Tahoe and the Sierra regions Saturday afternoon and Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service.

From sunny skies and warm temperatures to gusty winds, significantly cooler conditions and the chance for a blast of snow in the Sierra and maybe even down to the valley floor: what a difference a day makes. It should be noted that forecasters were well ahead on their game day weather predictions, giving us an a 4-day heads up about the wind and its arrival this Super Bowl Sunday.

Heading into the weekend it sure will seem like spring around the Carson City region and even up at Lake Tahoe, with ample sunshine and near record high temperatures. By Sunday though, that will change as a strong cold front brings much colder and windier conditions with a possible quick round of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

NV Energy reports power outages late Tuesday morning affecting nearly 300 customers around Carson City. An outage was reported in the West Winnie Lane area around at around 10:35 p.m. affecting 271 customers. At around the time of the outage Carson City dispatch reported that a tree limb was down in the area.

The Carson City Fire Department will be conducting wildland fuels reduction prescribed burn operations beginning Wednesday, Jan. 22, in the Timberline area throughout the week, weather permitting.

A weak winter storm will pass through the region Tuesday, bringing gusty winds and a chance of rain to the Carson City region and some snow across Sierra passes, according to the National Weather Service.

UPDATE 2:30PM: There's an 8-vehicle pileup on Highway 50 West Spooner in the eastbound lane below Golf Club Drive. No injuries were reported. Another spinout related crash was reported near the pileup, also in the eastbound lane. Motorists are advised not to drive up the hill due to slick conditions.

A strong system moving into the region Thursday has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Storm Warning for Lake Tahoe and Sierra and a Winter Weather Advisory for the Carson City region.

Weather permitting, the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team will continue prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks in the Tahoe Basin.

High wind gusts occurred throughout the Carson City and Lake Tahoe region Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning, especially along ridge tops and wind prone locations. The National Weather Service chart above includes selected locations where wind gusts of 50 mph or above were reported.

The second week of January has blown in quite fiercely, with a High Wind Warning to last through 1 p.m. Tuesday. Activities around the capital city include the 2020 Winter Reading Challenge at the library, a brown bag luncheon featuring famed environmental writer Michael Branch at the Nevada State Library and Archives, the weekly gathering of the Carson City Toastmasters at Max Casino, a meeting of the Carson City School Board, live cool jazz at Living the Good Life and more.

A weather system moving into the region will bring strong gusty winds, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a High Wind Warning from 10 p.m. Monday through 1 p.m. Tuesday for the greater Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley, and Dayton areas as well as the Mono County region.

A series of storm systems will move into the Carson City and Lake Tahoe region beginning late Monday bringing strong, gusty winds, chances of rain and snow to the valley floors and feet of snow in the Sierra by Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Looking at the week ahead weather wise around the Carson City region, forecasters say a couple of weak weather systems may bring some wind and a slight chance of rain or snow showers to the area Tuesday night and Thursday, but nothing to brag about until possibly into the weekend.

Anytime there is wind, there are outages, at least in our neck of the woods.

As of 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning, approximately 40 NV Energy Customers are without power in Carson City and Washoe Valley with damage to equipment being the cause.

According to NV Energy, all power to the three equipment points should be restored by 12:30 p.m.

The areas in Carson City lost power around 5:45 a.m. and 7:22 a.m., while Washoe Valley’s outage occurred around 7:21 a.m.

CARSON CITY — As northern Nevada ushers in a new year, the Nevada Department of Transportation will be rolling out new sign and signal systems as part of transportation advances to help keep drivers safer in 2020.

A fast moving, weak storm will bring the potential for light snow to the Sierra, northeast California, and western Nevada late Sunday afternoon into Monday morning. While significant accumulation is not expected, travel impacts are probable, with the worst conditions likely Sunday night into Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Heading into Christmas Eve, activities around the capital city are winding down, but the last minute shopping will continue, so prepare for that rush on the roadways and at local stores. It is the last day of the Holiday Craft Show at Carson Mall, so stop on by. There are no planned Muscle Powered fitness events scheduled. Unsettled weather is ahead for the Carson City region over the next few days beginning with a weak and warm storm moving into the area, which accounts for the gusty conditions Thursday morning. This will be followed by another system Friday into Saturday, bringing some valley rain that may turn to light snow showers later this weekend.
