The Reno Chapter No. 1 Disabled American Veterans organization has awarded the first-ever $1,000 scholarship to go to a Western Nevada College student. The scholarship, administered by the Western Nevada College Foundation in Carson City, will be awarded in November to a disabled veteran, or the dependent of a disabled veteran, at a dinner in Sparks Nov. 6.

Nevada JobConnect will hold two job fairs this week, Wednesday, in Reno and Thursday in Carson City. The job fairs are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.

The job fair on Wednesday will be held at the Summit Mall at 13945 S. Virginia Street, Suite 636 in Reno and the Thursday job fair will be held at the Carson City Fuji Park Exhibit Hall at 601 Old Clear Creek Road.

BSA Troop 33 is excited to announce it will be hosting its 2nd Annual “Send a Scout to Camp” Car and Truck Show Fundraiser on August 15, 2015 at Carson City’s Fuji Park.

The Show will be from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.; award ceremony starts at 3 p.m. Registration is $40 per entry. There is still time for pre-registration or you can register on the day of the event. Each participant will receive a T-shirt, one lunch meal ticket, and a dash plaque.

The Salvation Army is collecting Back Packs and School Supplies for disadvantaged children through August 13th. The Salvation Army has been getting calls from families in need for several weeks asking for help. Children from Carson City School District, Silver State Charter School, and Douglas County School District will receive all back packs and school supplies that are collected.

A 41-year-old woman was booked Wednesday into Carson City jail on three felony warrants: possession of drugs for sale, grand larceny and burglary, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

The Clark County elections warehouse has a history of problems that have required the attention of engineers for the better part of a decade but the county decided in 2008 to pay $11.8 million for the property anyway....

Now that the California 2015 fishing season is open (complete with fresh snow), this is a reminder that if you are planning to fish in the Golden State, be advised you will need the current license and any necessary stamps.
You can purchase that license and applicable stamps at a number of local outlets or on the Internet.

Annual Non-Resident Licenses:
The 2015 non-resident annual fishing license is $126.36, and it is good through December 31, 2015.

In 2011 Mr. Kenneth J. Kunkel claimed charitable contributions deductions of $37,315 for non cash contributions. IRS denied the deductions for lack of substantiation and assessed a tax deficiency of $12,338 and also a $2,468 accuracy-related penalty.

Tuesdays are an excellent day for a stroll. Carson City Parks and Recreation and Muscle Powered both offer a guided walk/hike along one of our valley’s many trails. This morning enjoy beautiful views from the Virginia and Truckee Trail on the west side of Carson; it is also an excellent trail for biking. Later today, tag along with Muscle Powered for something more challenging. They will be exploring around Centennial Park on the far northeast side of Carson City. The sun is shining, the flowers blooming, the birds chirping, the wind gusting, and Carson City is hopping! Easter fun can be found this weekend at the annual EGGstravaganza at Carson Tahoe Medical Center, the Children’s Museum, the Carson Mall, and the Brewery Arts Center.

Head over to Mills Park for the Vietnam Veterans Day Celebration, complete with military vehicles, exhibits, and more. For demonstrations from soldiers with an even older history, the Nevada Civil War Volunteers will be in Dayton Saturday.

It’s Veterans and Military Day at the Legislature today, complete with a display of the various services available to our Veterans set up in the front foyer. On this day in 1982, a ground-breaking ceremony was held in Washington D.C. for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Carson City has a Vietnam Veterans Memorial of its own located in Mills Park. The memorial will be the site of a Welcome Home Celebration this Saturday for Vietnam Veterans Day.

Nothing takes the edge off a Monday like a cute puppy on National Puppy Day. The one pictured is no longer that little, but he’s mine; and, no, you can’t have him. If you are looking for a dog to call your own, check out the Nevada Humane Society: they have several pooches (and kitties) looking for their forever homes.

On this day in 1931 our state legalized gambling; what laws will they be making today? You can always head over to the Legislature building to sit in on a committee meeting or an Assembly session, eat in the café, or track down your representative to voice your opinion. The first harbinger of spring arrived over the weekend, Daylight Saving Time. That’s bound to make this Monday a little sleepier than usual, but there’s good news: it’s National Napping Day! If you’re a fisherman or fisherwoman, it’s that time of the year to remind you to purchase your Nevada 2015-2016 fishing license. That new fishing license year begins on Sunday, March 1 and will run through the last day in February, 2016.

A 44-year-old Carson City man, Michael Lee Douglas, was arrested Thursday, 4 a.m. in the area of Carson and Robinson streets on a felony burglary warrant issued Jan. 23, 2015 out of Carson City Justice Court, a sheriff’s deputy said.

UPDATE 3:30 pm: The Quad County Hazmat Team made entry into the structure utilizing Class A hazmat suits. This incident has been determined to not be of environmental concern. No injuries were reported during this incident. The property will be turned over to the property manager and a contracted hazardous material clean-up crew at approximately 5 pm tonight.

The 5th annual CHS Safe and Sober 5k Run/Walk was a tremendous success with turn-out of 113 participants. The weather cleared up this morning and with just a bit of wind at race time, we couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather, maybe even a sunburn.

Inspections through June 30, 2014 include restaurants, a food warehouse, a retail food producer and a retail grocer meat market. Of the 10 establishments that were inspected, six received perfect scores of 100.
