My daily list of activities might be called ‘things to do in Carson City,’ but I frequently include happenings from the surrounding valleys. Today, it’s the Thirsty Third Thursday wine walk in downtown Gardnerville that gets the spotlight. Dayton’s weekly Farmers Market can be found this afternoon in front of ‘Community Roots’ on Highway 50. It’s probably past patio weather, but there is plenty of room inside of Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar for all of tonight’s karaoke lovers.

THURSDAY:

Participants in the 5K Walk for Suicide Prevention walk through downtown Carson City Saturday morning to help raise awareness about suicide. Partnership Carson City, the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention and the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention co-host the event to educate the community about resources available for people suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts, as well as give support for their families.

I’m going to suggest that you keep this weekend’s plans flexible. There’s only a chance of rain, but the chance of it showing up at the wrong time is always high. The very early morning is best spent watching the hot air balloons against the Reno skyline, but you’ll probably want a sweater for the pre-dawn chill. Head up the hill to Virginia City this weekend. DAYTON — On Saturday, Sept. 9, more than a dozen communities throughout Nevada are participating in the annual Walk in Memory — Walk for Hope event. The goal of the event is to increase awareness of the effects suicide has on our nation and state, and to remember those who have been lost to suicide.

It’s a wine-walking kind of day: join in the thirsty Thursday fun in downtown Gardnerville and stick around for the coffee and dessert after-party in Heritage Park. Take a melodious trip around the world with Tom Green: instruments from all over are the focus of a lecture and concert tonight at the Brewery Arts Center. THURSDAY: Jazz and Beyond Music Festival

Wine and jazz mixed together Saturday as the 2017 Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival has gotten underway for its three-week festival.

I’m sending good thoughts to those in the California fire zones: with as bad as the smoke is here, I can only imagine how bad their eyes burn. Free ice cream and a concert featuring the Capital City Community Band can be found tonight at the First United Methodist Church on King Street. You’ll find free pool, a nice beer selection, and great drinks at Remedy’s Bar on Williams Street tonight. Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery celebrates the paper and book sculptures of mother-daughter team, My Thousand Words, at a meet and greet reception tonight. Keep reading for a plethora of ways to spend the day.

We are in the midst of a hot summer that is drawing folks out of the kitchen and in front of the grill. For my family, in particular, whether we are hosting a party or just a typical Sunday barbecue, there’s something incredible about being outside, gazing at the sun settling in the Sierra Nevadas while a bratwurst or fresh piece of salmon is sizzling on the grill.

Take an easy hike with Muscle Powered along Voltaire Canyon, and your leashed, friendly dog is invited to join. Congratulations to the Battle Born Business Center; their Grand Opening Celebration includes a live reggae band. The Carson High Bands take to the Bob Boldrick Theater stage in their final concert of the school year; go cheer on the award-winning Blue Thunder. You won’t want to miss a special night with the Novelists at Sassafras.

Carson City, Nev. — Under a new requirement by the state of Nevada, the meningococcal vaccine (MCV4) will be required for all Nevada seventh graders or new students entering school in grades 7-12. The requirement takes effect beginning July 1, 2017, in time for the 2017-18 school year.

It seems like overnight the crabapples have exploded into bloom. Take advantage of a beautiful day by joining one of the walks organized every Tuesday. An easy walk with Parks and Rec will take you along a portion of the Mexican Ditch Trail today. The Muscle Powered walk in early evening is more strenuous. Fathers will want to get moving if they plan on taking their daughter to the Carson High Father Daughter Dance this Friday. Swing by the High School office between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. for tickets or shoot an email to teacher Angila Golek to make sure they’re waiting at will call.

There is something for everyone at a Friends of NRA event. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere is brimming with excitement. Whether you’re keeping an eye on that unique item in the silent or live auction, trying your luck at the game tables, or just dining on some delicious food, you’ll be sure to have a good time.

It’s a family-friendly event chock full of everything from exclusive, limited edition merchandise, firearms, knives, art, jewelry, and more. Not to mention all the great people you’ll meet in the process!

It’s not exactly warm outside, but compared to some of the bitter cold we’ve had this month, it’s not that bad. Take advantage of the dry weather by joining in on the Parks and Recreation Easy Walk in John Mankins Park in Silver Oak. It’s a Jazz Extravaganza at the Community Center tonight. Mile High Jazz Band has teamed up with the Carson High and Carson Middle School jazz bands for their annual concert. The monthly fundraiser at Firehouse Subs makes raising money for Relay for Life as easy as ordering dinner.

With flooding likely in parts of northern Nevada this weekend, residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with what to do before, during and after a flood. The best local resource for information on flooding is the Nevada Floods website. Residents are encouraged to visit the website now, but here is some basic information.

There has been a lot of talk this week about the 1997 flood. Twenty years ago, on New Year’s Eve Day, 1996, my Dad and I went goose hunting. We had set out our decoys and had a good early morning hunt, however, it started raining so we packed everything up, leaving the bags of decoys in a dry irrigation ditch.

A mighty Ho! Ho! brought bright eyes and wide smiles by the dozens Saturday as Santa Claus made his way though the capital city after sunset, carried not by sleigh but patrol vehicles in a caravan led by the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Reserve Organization.

Hello fellow anglers, I can tell you where there will be plenty of fish this weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1-2, is the Kokanee Salmon festival at Taylor Creek located on Highway 89, a half mile north of Camp Richardson on the south end of Lake Tahoe.

Street Vibes and the Candy Dance are always the endcap to September. Arts and crafts take over the small hamlet of Genoa this weekend; get a jump on your holiday gift list. All the other corners of Northern Nevada are a playground for the thousands of motorcycle riders and enthusiasts here to enjoy the bike rally. Battle Born Harley on Research Way offers a huge party without ever leaving the valley. Those two events are hardly all that Carson City and our neighboring counties have to offer, however. Keep reading for more fun than you’ll know what to do with.

Get ready, the weekend is almost here and it brings with it the Way it Was Rodeo and Steampunk Ball to Virginia City, the Air Races to Reno, and the annual Edible Pedal bike ride through Washoe Valley. Before the weekend carries you away, enjoy our beautiful valley. Take in the views with Muscle Powered as they hike along Conestoga. Relax on the Veranda at Adele's and enjoy the music stylings of Linda Arnn Arteno. The art scene downtown gets a boost with Kathleen Heiner Stemler's boutique show at the Champagne Beauty Bar and a reception for artist Pam Black down the block at Artsy Fartsy.

In case you missed it, the Washoe County Health District recently put out a notice that multiple bats infected with rabies were found in Washoe County.

In one of the cases, four domestic pets came into contact with one of the rabid bats. It’s a situation no one wants to think about, and one that hasn’t happened in Washoe County in decades, but it’s time to remind people about the importance of vaccinating their pets and why it’s so important to everyone around you.

Suicide Prevention Week culminates Saturday with the 10th annual "Walk in Memory, Walk for Hope" observances held in Carson City, Dayton, Gardnerville, Yerington, Fallon and nine communities statewide.

Nevada ranks 5th in the nation in its rate of suicide deaths. Suicide is the 8th leading cause of death in Nevada and the 10th leading cause of death in the United States with one suicide occurring on average every 12.3 minutes. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among Nevadans 15 to 34-year-olds, according to state health officials.
