CARSON CITY — Friday demonstrations of the Nevada State Museum’s historic Coin Press No. 1 have proven so popular this summer that museum officials are extending the program through Labor Day weekend in September.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada State Railroad Museum’s historic McKeen Motor Car — built for service on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad in 1910 — will be making its first runs of 2018 this weekend, May 5-6.

It seems somehow appropriate that snow was falling in Virginia City on the morning of Monday, April 16, as crews from the Nevada State Railroad Museum and Comstock Historic Center prepared the Virginia & Truckee Railroad locomotive “Dayton” for its return trip to Carson City.

CARSON CITY — After more than a year, visitors to the Nevada State Museum can watch the museum’s historic Coin Press No. 1 carry on a mission it started nearly 150 year ago in the very same building.

In February of 1870, the sparkling new steam-powered coin press inside the United States Mint in Carson City struck its first coin, a Seated Liberty silver dollar with a crisp CC mint mark.

For the sixth consecutive year, The Polar Express holiday train rides on the historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad have sold out. More than 15,000 passengers secured rides on the only train in Northern Nevada that visits the North Pole.

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad has partnered with an architectural design class at Truckee Meadows Community College for a conceptual redesign of the V&T’s depot in Carson City. The project provided an opportunity for 16 students to take their imaginations inside the classroom out to the community – in this case for ideas to transform the current depot into a memorable train station.

Bernie Allen walked in his first Nevada Day Parade 70 years ago. He turned his little red wagon into a covered wagon and hitched it to his dog. He walked alongside his pup dressed as a miner, using equipment borrowed from a neighbor. This year, he will lead the procession through downtown Carson City as the grand marshal.

A month from its inaugural ride, The Polar Express is on its way to selling out with over 50 percent of tickets sold for the 2016 season. Commemoration of the first stone laid that began the life of the U.S. Mint and the Nevada State Museum in Carson City is set for 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 24, in the same place guests gathered 150 years ago to honor placement of the building’s cornerstone.
