You can always tell when summer arrives in Carson City — that's when Nevada's official state tree, the orange traffic cone, starts sprouting up all over town.
Here is the Carson City road report for the period of Monday, June 21 to Sunday, June 27:
The Nevada Department of Transportation will continue fog sealing sections of roadway in the area. The following roadways will have lane closures between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., weather permitting:
— Northbound Carson City Freeway from US 50 to East Lake Boulevard — Monday and Tuesday

A Rail of a Good Time: Virginia & Truckee Railroad opens season with great deals

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad opened its 2010 season with completely booked train rides over Memorial Day weekend. As if channeling the “Little Engine that Could,” the historic railway started right where it left off last year with overwhelming public support. After a sold-out season in 2009, the V&T has expanded operations to Friday through Sunday rides, now through Oct. 31.
The strong beginning to the V&T’s summer operations has tourism officials hopeful the trend sticks.

Back on the tracks again, the V&T Railroad kicked off Saturday with a near-sold out day, ample sunshine and a promising full-steam-ahead summer.
"We had a couple of seats left, with quite a few tickets sold for tomorrow," said Candy Duncan, executive director of the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau. "Today went very smoothly and everyone was excited about going on that first ride of the season."

The discount is available on adult tickets, May 29 through June 25, providing an affordable, $24 round trip voyage on a vintage diesel train between Carson City and Virginia City.

McAvoy Layne's Mark Twain at Piper's Opera House on Saturday

As every schoolchild knows, Sam Clemens first used the byline Mark Twain on February 3, 1863, while a reporter for the Territorial Enterprise in Virginia City.

What's not so well known is that he took the name, not as a tribute to the river pilot Captain Sellers (as he wrote in "Life on the Mississippi") but from his facetious way of calling out additions to his bar tab.
