The sun is shining, the flowers blooming, the birds chirping, the wind gusting, and Carson City is hopping! Easter fun can be found this weekend at the annual EGGstravaganza at Carson Tahoe Medical Center, the Children’s Museum, the Carson Mall, and the Brewery Arts Center.

Head over to Mills Park for the Vietnam Veterans Day Celebration, complete with military vehicles, exhibits, and more. For demonstrations from soldiers with an even older history, the Nevada Civil War Volunteers will be in Dayton Saturday.

Thursday, March 26: Things to do in Carson City

It’s Veterans and Military Day at the Legislature today, complete with a display of the various services available to our Veterans set up in the front foyer. On this day in 1982, a ground-breaking ceremony was held in Washington D.C. for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Carson City has a Vietnam Veterans Memorial of its own located in Mills Park. The memorial will be the site of a Welcome Home Celebration this Saturday for Vietnam Veterans Day.

Vietnam Veterans Day 'Welcome Home' ceremony at Mills Park

The Carson Area Chapter 388 Vietnam Veterans of America will host the Vietnam Veterans Day “Welcome Home” ceremony on Saturday, March 28, at the Nevada Vietnam Memorial located at Mills Park.

All Vietnam veterans and the public are invited to attend the ceremony, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. that will honor those who served and came home and remembering Brothers and Sisters who served but never made it home.

Kaempfer Crowell Law Firm to donate $3,500 to Honor Flight Nevada, Vietnam Tour Project

Nevada law firm Kaempfer Crowell will present a $3,500 donation on Friday to Honor Flight Nevada, a non-profit organization dedicated to transporting veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit memorials honoring their service and sacrifices. The presentation will take place at noon on the steps of the Laxalt Building in Carson City.

WNC Scholarship Workshop for Student Vets on Dec. 11

Western Nevada College has scheduled a free workshop on the Carson City campus to help veterans apply for college scholarships.

The two-hour workshop is being presented by the Veterans Resource Center on Thursday, Dec. 11, 1 p.m. It will assist veterans in applying for WNC scholarships through the WNC Foundation Scholarship program, as well as two $500 scholarships provided by the Vietnam Veterans of America.

Second Annual Adopt a Vet Poker Run set for Saturday in Carson City

The 2nd Annual "Adopt a Vet Poker Run" sponsored by the Carson Area Chapter 388 of the Vietnam Veterans of America is being held at Carson City Harley-Davidson on Saturday, August 16.

The Adopt a Vet Dental Program is a program providing dental care for low income veterans.

The event includes the motorcycle poker run through Dayton, Minden, Genoa and Zephyr Cove, live music, lunch, ride pouch and a raffle. Registration ($30) starts at 8:30 am, run at 10:00 am.

Carson Nugget gives local Vietnam vets group $1,130 it collected from March event

The Carson Nugget presented members of the Carson City Area Chapter 388 of the Vietnam Veterans of America a check for $1,131.80 to show its support for the group and its efforts in supporting fellow war veterans.

Vets in Carson City gather Saturday for national Vietnam Veterans Day

More than 200 veterans from the Vietnam War gathered Saturday at the Carson Nugget to pay tribute to each other, those who died and those who remain missing in action as part of national Vietnam Veterans Day.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Tonkin Gulf Resolution. Many consider the resolution the official start of the Vietnam war, though many Americans were fighting and dying in Vietnam beginning in the mid 1950s. It also marks the 40th anniversary of the withdrawal of combat troops from Vietnam.

Weather forces Carson City Vietnam Veterans Day ceremony move to Carson Nugget ballroom

Organizers of the the Vietnam Veterans Day ceremony slated for Mills Park today announced the ceremony has moved to the Carson Nugget ballroom beginning at 5:30 p.m. A reception will follow beginning at 6 p.m.

Rick Arnold, President of the Carson City Area Chapter 388 of the Vietnam Veterans of America announced the event was changed due to weather conditions.

The Chapter, a Commemorative Partner in The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration, is holding the event to focus attention on the 50th anniversary of the War.

Tim Tetz, Director of Public Outreach at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund in Washington D.C. announced Saturday that a search is underway to locate and obtain photographs of those Northern Nevadan’s who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam conflict.

Free screening of Vietnam War documentary today at Western Nevada College

Nevadans asked to 'Never Forget' MIA/POWs at Capitol Building ceremony

Nevadans paid tribute and remembered those missing in action and prisoners of war in a ceremony Friday on the Plaza of the Nevada State Veterans Memorial.

In a ceremony officially proclaimed POW/MIA Recognition Day in Nevada by Gov. Brian Sandoval, it was noted that more than 100,000 Americans have been unaccounted for in military operations spanning from WWI to present.

The Vietnam Veterans of America Carson Area Chapter 388 will again be presenting a special observance of National POW/MIA Recognition Day, today, Friday at 11 a.m. on the Plaza of the Nevada State Veterans Memorial.

The Memorial is located immediately behind the Nevada State Capitol Building at 101 N. Carson in Carson City. Guest speakers will be Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell - himself a member of Chapter 388 and Caleb S. Cage, Director of Military and Veterans Policy for the State of Nevada. Members of the Chapter will also present a "Missing Warrior Table and Honors Ceremony."

Reid announces $4.5 million in grants for Nevada veterans' service organizations

Grants amounting to $4.5 million from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will go to four Nevada service organizations that assist veterans in the Silver State, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid announced Friday.

U.S. Vets, Vietnam Veterans of California, The Salvation Army, and HELP Social Service organization, each have received grants totaling $4.5 million through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program. This program supports VA’s efforts to prevent at-risk veterans from becoming homeless and rapidly re-house those who have recently fallen into homelessness.

Carson City Vietnam veterans to unveil special memorial in Fernley to fallen soldiers, nurses

The Vietnam Veterans of America, Carson City Area Chapter 388 invite you attend a Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 27, beginning at 11 AM at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley.

The service will be an hour long. Immediately following the service, there will be an unveiling of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The shrine lists the names of 151 young men from Nevada who gave their lives in Vietnam. Adjacent to that are the names of eight nurses who also gave their lives in Vietnam while they were there caring for our troops.

Carson City Bike Month Bigger Than Ever

May is Bike Month in Carson City, and that means more bike riders out and about, commuting, or riding for fun. In honor of National Bike Month, Muscle-Powered, Citizens for a Walkable and Bikeable Carson City has developed a full schedule of events for 2013, including the Tour de Carson May 5- a 30-mile bike ride for more advanced riders, along with two Family Cruise rides, one on May 15 at 6 p.m. starting at Telegraph Square, and a second Ride with a Vet on May 18 in conjunction with Chapter 388 of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

Next month is Bike Month and there are plenty of activities planned in Carson City. We kick off on April 24 with Nevada Moves Day at the State Legislature.
Muscle Powered is organizing exhibits in the front foyer of the legislative building highlighting Nevada groups working for better walking and biking. Participants include the Reno Bike Project, Safe Routes to Schools, the Carson Valley Trails Association and more.

Carson City recognizes Vietnam Veterans Day at Mills Park

Dozens of veterans gathered Saturday at Mills Park in Carson City to pay tribute to fellow war veterans, to recognize the 50th anniversary of the official start of the Vietnam War and to commemorate the 40-year-mark of the end of combat operations, March 29th, 1973.

The gathering, hosted by the Carson City Area Vietnam Veterans Chapter 388, brought together several dozen Northern Nevada veterans of the Vietnam War and other wars for a ceremony, similar to ones held across the county in recognition of National Vietnam Veterans Day.

The Carson City Chapter 388 of the Vietnam Veterans of America will mark Vietnam Veterans Day in a short ceremony and social gathering on Saturday, March 30, 2013.

The short ceremony will be held at the Vietnam Memorial, located in Mills Park in Carson City, NV in the southeast corner of the park at 5 PM. (The park may be accessed from either Saliman Road across from Carson High School).

After the ceremony, a “Welcome Home” social will be held at the High Sierra Brewery Company, located at 302 North Carson Street at 5:30 PM. No Host Bar, free appetizers, and good cheer.

Traveling Vietnam memorial stirs emotions in Carson City

Rick Arnold’s voice caught as he described the first time he saw the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
“The first thing that struck me was how little I knew of the people on the Wall,” said Arnold, president of Vietnam Veterans of American, Chapter 388 in Carson City. “Yes, there are names I know. Names ...”
He stopped, but he wasn’t ready to quit talking. He started again, his voice softer, huskier. “But so many names I know nothing about,” he finished.

Vietnam Vets Roar Through Carson City

The Carson City Sheriff's Office escorted about 500 Vietnam Veterans as they rode through the city on their bikes. They were escorting the Traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial that is being erected at Mills Park as part of Battle Born Days and the Nevada Day Festivities. The Downtown Business Association merchants were on hand to wave flags and cheer them on.

Carson Nugget event helps veterans bring traveling memorial to town

Carson City, NV—Another Carson Nugget event will help bring the Vietnam Vets Traveling Memorial Wall to Carson City this fall.

During the entire month of June, the casino held a slot event to support this worthy cause. Today, the casino presented a check from the event to the Vietnam Veterans of America, Carson Area Chapter 388. Today’s check brings the total amount donated to this cause from the Carson Nugget to $2,000, which is just under a quarter of the group’s entire goal.
