Nearly 25,000 Nevadans have been told their unemployment insurance benefits will end after this week if Congress doesn't act by Tuesday to continue the federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation program.

On Jan. 2, the EUC program will expire, unless Congress votes to extend the federal benefits as it has done in the past, said Renee Olson, administrator Employment Security Division of the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation Division.

Nevada’s unemployment rate dropped to 10.8 percent in November, the lowest it’s been in more than three years.
Carson City’s rate declined from 10.7 percent in October to 10.3 percent in November.

The state may have paid up to $5 million in unemployment benefits to inmates in prison or county jails in the last three years, a legislative audit says.
The report said an examination of records of the state Employment Security Division found 67 inmates illegally received a total of $240,000 in benefits in fiscal 2012.

CARSON CITY – A federal emergency unemployment benefit program will expire on Jan. 2, cutting off about 25,000 Nevadans from the program, a state agency reported today.

As a matter of law, the Nevada state constitution requires a balanced budget. As a matter of economic law and history, raising taxes will never balance a budget. It never has and never will. CARSON CITY – Nevada’s unemployment rate fell to 11.8 percent in September, a decline of three-tenths of a percentage point from the 12.1 percent rate reported for August and a significant improvement from September 2011’s reading of 13.6 percent, a state agency reported today.

The seasonally-adjusted rate remains above the 11.6 percent figure reported in May, which was a three-year low.

CARSON CITY – Candidates in two of Nevada’s hotly contested Congressional races debated the issues Thursday in separate 30-minute discussions on public television.
