UPDATE 5:52PM: According to Douglas County's Facebook page: "Things appear to be settling down out on Jacks Valley due to a little help from the rain. Residents are still being asked to remain aware!" Also noteworthy is the brush unit that Carson City sent to fight the fire, has since returned to Carson City.

According to CCFD Chief Sean Slamon, there were no fires burning in Kings Canyon. The Fire Department received calls, checked it out, and the smoke was drift smoke from the Jacks Valley Fire. CCFD did knock down a fire at residence on Muldoon Street in town. The small fire was caused by a lightning strike on the roof of the residence.

UPDATE 5:39PM: According to Douglas County Dispatch Jack’s Valley road has been reopened, and the Record Courier in Douglas County reported via twitter that forward progress has stopped with an assist from the rain.

Heading to Lake Tahoe for Labor Day weekend to celebrate the unofficial end of summer? Please keep the following in mind for a safe and fun-filled holiday weekend.

CARSON CITY — V&T Railway will hold auditions for the 2019 Polar Express season on Thursday, Sept. 5 and Friday, Sept. 6 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 7 from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Eastgate Depot in Carson City. The railway is looking for actors, actresses and singers, age 13 and up to play roles from the popular movie including stewards and conductors, elves and Santa Claus.

UPDATE: Fire officials said Thursday the Canyon Fire is 40 percent contained and burned around 440-acres. Full containment is expected by Saturday.

UPDATE 10:33PM: Evacuations have been lifted for residents east of Canyon Drive but the evacuation center remains open. Firefighters will continue to fight the Canyon Fire through the evening, according to the Douglas County government Twitter feed. The fire is estimated at 1,500 acres.

A brush fire that erupted Wednesday afternoon in south Douglas County near Topaz Ranch Estate in the Minnehaha Canyon area has firefighters from surrounding agencies, including Carson City, responding.

UPDATE: An arrest has been made in the Thursday morning fatal pedestrian hit and run crash that killed a 59-year-old Dayton man, identified as Michael Kuntz, according to Lyon County Sheriff's Office and the Nevada Highway Patrol. James Parisi, a 39-year-old Dayton resident, has been arrested in connection to the crime, according to NHP. Go here for the full story.

UPDATE: The Lyon County Sheriff's Office released three photos it calls a "vehicle of interest" in Thursday morning's fatal crash in the Dayton area in which an adult male walking five dogs was struck and killed in a hit and run crash. The Nevada Highway Patrol and the Lyon County Sheriff's Office are investigating a fatal hit and run crash involving a pedestrian that happened Thursday morning in the Dayton area.

CARSON CITY — To commemorate its historic 150-year anniversary, V&T Railway has introduced special anniversary trains running every Friday through the end of the season. Beginning Friday, Aug. 16, the Carson City to Virginia City train will feature re-enactments at the depot and during the 24-mile round-trip ride.

CARSON CITY — Returning for the 2019 season, the V&T Railway’s popular Toast of the Canyon train rides kicks off on Saturday, June 15 and will feature area wineries, distilleries and breweries. CARSON CITY — Nevada’s state museums are once again taking part in the national Blue Star Museums program, providing free admission to active-duty military personnel and their families.

The National Endowment for the Arts and Blue Star Families program, now in its 10th year, launched the 2019 program on Saturday, May 18 – Armed Forces Day – and it will stay in effect through the Labor Day Weekend.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office reports Thursday night that a brush fire has forced the closure of Foothill Road and Muller Lane. East Fork Fire is on scene, according to the agency's twitter account. The tweet, sent at 7:04 p.m., asks for people to stay clear of the area. Kicking off its 2019 season, V&T Railway will hold a special Mother’s Day train on Saturday, May 11 and Sunday, May 12. Guests will experience a 24-mile round-trip ride through the historic Comstock, departing Carson City (Eastgate Depot) at 10 a.m. and will arrive in Virginia City at approximately 11:30 a.m., before returning to Carson at 4:15 p.m.

The suspect in the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office officer involved shooting, 43 year old Oakland resident, Stefon Demar Jefferson has been charged with attempted murder of a police officer in addition to numerous additional felonies related to this investigation.

With the spring run-off, citizens could expect to see some road closures on arterial roads such as Mottsville, Centerville Lane, Muller Lane and Genoa Lane.

Nevada Builders Alliance, the state’s largest construction and building trade association, will hold a first nail ceremony for the Bank Saloon in Carson City on Monday, April 15. Formerly known as the historic Jack’s Bar, the alliance purchased the building with a vision to pay homage to its colorful history.

UPDATE 4:02PM: The Lyon County Sheriff's Office has identified the man involved in a standoff that happened Tuesday morning. George “Vic” Sheppard was taken into custody at around noon and faces a charge of domestic battery. A female victim was treated for minor injuries.
