Lightning touches off fast moving wildfire in Jacks Valley

UPDATE 5:52PM: According to Douglas County's Facebook page: "Things appear to be settling down out on Jacks Valley due to a little help from the rain. Residents are still being asked to remain aware!" Also noteworthy is the brush unit that Carson City sent to fight the fire, has since returned to Carson City.

According to CCFD Chief Sean Slamon, there were no fires burning in Kings Canyon. The Fire Department received calls, checked it out, and the smoke was drift smoke from the Jacks Valley Fire. CCFD did knock down a fire at residence on Muldoon Street in town. The small fire was caused by a lightning strike on the roof of the residence.

UPDATE 5:39PM: According to Douglas County Dispatch Jack’s Valley road has been reopened, and the Record Courier in Douglas County reported via twitter that forward progress has stopped with an assist from the rain.

V&T Railway holds auditions for 2019 Polar Express at Carson City Eastgate Depot

CARSON CITY — V&T Railway will hold auditions for the 2019 Polar Express season on Thursday, Sept. 5 and Friday, Sept. 6 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 7 from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Eastgate Depot in Carson City. The railway is looking for actors, actresses and singers, age 13 and up to play roles from the popular movie including stewards and conductors, elves and Santa Claus.

Wildfire near Topaz Ranch Estates 40 percent contained, full containment by Saturday

UPDATE: Fire officials said Thursday the Canyon Fire is 40 percent contained and burned around 440-acres. Full containment is expected by Saturday.

UPDATE 10:33PM: Evacuations have been lifted for residents east of Canyon Drive but the evacuation center remains open. Firefighters will continue to fight the Canyon Fire through the evening, according to the Douglas County government Twitter feed. The fire is estimated at 1,500 acres.

A brush fire that erupted Wednesday afternoon in south Douglas County near Topaz Ranch Estate in the Minnehaha Canyon area has firefighters from surrounding agencies, including Carson City, responding.

NHP: Fatal hit and run crash kills pedestrian, 5 dogs near Dayton

UPDATE: An arrest has been made in the Thursday morning fatal pedestrian hit and run crash that killed a 59-year-old Dayton man, identified as Michael Kuntz, according to Lyon County Sheriff's Office and the Nevada Highway Patrol. James Parisi, a 39-year-old Dayton resident, has been arrested in connection to the crime, according to NHP. Go here for the full story.

UPDATE: The Lyon County Sheriff's Office released three photos it calls a "vehicle of interest" in Thursday morning's fatal crash in the Dayton area in which an adult male walking five dogs was struck and killed in a hit and run crash. V&T Railway celebrates 150 years with anniversary trains running Fridays through Oct. 11

CARSON CITY — To commemorate its historic 150-year anniversary, V&T Railway has introduced special anniversary trains running every Friday through the end of the season. Beginning Friday, Aug. 16, the Carson City to Virginia City train will feature re-enactments at the depot and during the 24-mile round-trip ride.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office reports Thursday night that a brush fire has forced the closure of Foothill Road and Muller Lane. East Fork Fire is on scene, according to the agency's twitter account. The tweet, sent at 7:04 p.m., asks for people to stay clear of the area.
