DETR: Regular UI initial claims down; PUA initial claims remain elevated; Continued claims in UI decline as extended benefit claims rise

For the week ending October 31, initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 8,158, down 878 claims, or 9.7 percent, compared to last week’s total of 9,036 claims, according to finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).

For the week ending October 17, initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 8,734 down 230 claims, or 2.6 percent, compared to last week’s total of 8,964 claims, according to finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).

Through the week ending October 17, there have been 728,045 initial claims filed in 2020, 706,393 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

DETR: Regular Initial Claims Up While PUA Initial Claims Dip; PEUC Continued Claims Well Above 60,000

According to finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR), initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 8,964 for the week ending October 10, up 1,023 claims, or 12.9 percent, compared to last week’s total of 7,941 claims.

Through the week ending October 10, there have been 719,311 initial claims filed in 2020, 697,659 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

Through the week ending September 12, there have been 686,683 initial claims filed in 2020, 665,031 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

Finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) show initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 8,858 for the week ending August 22, down 2,080 claims, or 19.0 percent, compared to last week’s total of 10,938 claims.

This is the fewest initial claims filed since the week ending March 14. Through the week ending August 22, there have been 662,510 initial claims filed in 2020, 640,716 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

Loyalton Fire update for Friday, August 21: 60 percent contained, almost 50,000 acres have burned

As of 7 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, the Loyalton Fire has burned 46,872 and is 60% contained. At least five homes and six outbuildings have been destroyed in the fire. No casualties or injuries have been reported.

Crews worked overnight to find and extinguish heat sources interior to containment lines near Balls Canyon Ranch and along the southern fire perimeter. Priorities today are to continue to strengthen lines, backhaul excess equipment, and identify remaining heat sources.

Dense smoke advisory extended through Friday for Carson City area, Northern Nevada region

Thick, unhealthy smoke from northern California fires continues to saturate outside air Thursday in Carson City, Carson Valley, Lyon County and throughout western and Northern Nevada, prompting the National Weather Service to extend a Dense Smoke Advisory into Friday morning.

DETR: Unemployment Rate Improves; Employment Adds Jobs Back for Third Month Straight in July

According to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s (DETR) July 2020 economic report, employment in Nevada realized an increase of 14,800 jobs over the month and saw a decrease of -138,700 jobs since July 2019, or -9.8%.

The total employment level in the State is 1,281,100. The state’s unemployment rate is 14% this month, down 1.2 percentage point from June but up 10.1 percentage point when compared to July 2019.

Carson City Health and Human Services is reporting Sunday, August 16, 2020 that there are 2 new cases and 11 recoveries of COVID-19 in the Quad-County region. This brings the total number of cases to 881, with 710 recoveries and 15 deaths, 156 cases remain active.

The National Weather Service based in Reno issued a tornado warning over the hill in Lassen County today, due to the fire in Loyalton.
