The Carson City Fair at Fuji Park offers a plethora of entertainment for all ages including tractor pulls, a carnival, and farm animals. I have long found it impossible to decide which Carson City event is my favorite: forever waffling between Nevada Day and the Taste of Downtown. Seeing as the annual parade is still months away, I’m going to side with ‘The Taste’ purely for its timeliness. With over forty local eateries participating, multiple raffles at downtown shops, and seven bands rocking every corner of the event, it’s practically impossible to have a bad time. This might be the biggest happening in town, but it’s by no means the only good time: read on for all this weekend’s options.

Fire crews from around region respond to brush fire in Jacks Valley, forward progress stops

UPDATE: The James Loop Fire was mapped at 260 acres. The fire was caused by heavy equipment working on a new home under construction, according to a joint news release from Douglas County, East Fork Fire Protection District and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

UPDATE 4:43PM: From Douglas County Sheriff's Office via Twitter: Firefighters are making good progress on the James Fire to the north and east side flanks with two helicopters dropping water and 1 fixed wing air tanker dropping retardant. Firefighters continue battling active fire on the west side. Two hand crews have arrived and more coming.

UPDATE 413PM: In a fire that exploded fast threatening homes in the James Canyon area north of Genoa, firefighters have been able to save up to 30 structures thus far that are threatened by the James Fire that started Monday afternoon. Two helicopters, 1 air tanker and more than 100 firefighters continue to battle the blaze. There's no word yet on containment but Douglas County officials say the fire remains at around 50 acres as of 4 p.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Lyon County firefighters respond to brush fire near Gold Ranch casino in Dayton

UPDATE 3:22PM: Both lanes of Highway 50 through Dayton are now open, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. Firefighters are mopping up the area.

UPDATE 3:08PM: Forward progress on the fire in Dayton has stopped, according to Central Lyon County Fire Protection District. The fire burned approximately 10 acres entirely on Dayton State Park property, said the CLCFPD battalion chief. The fire and investigation is now under the command of Nevada Division of Forestry.
