Road re-opened after V & T derails near Virginia City (UPDATE)

A storm cell that hit the Gold Hill area produced mud slides that may be behind what caused V&T Engine 29 to derail, officials said this morning.

The V&T engine derailed last night at about 6:30 near Gold Hill after a series of heavy rains produced micro-mudslides, many of which may have flowed onto the V&T Railroad tracks.

Longtime labor leader Danny Coyle dies in Carson City

Longtime Nevada labor leader Danny Coyle died of cancer in Carson City early Saturday morning, July 17. He was 74 years old.
At the time of his death, he was president of the retiree chapter of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 4041/AFL-CIO, an organization he founded. He was concurrently legislative vice-chair of the Nevada Alliance for Retired Americans. He had also served as president of AFSCME Local 4041/AFL-CIO.

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad opened its 2010 season with completely booked train rides over Memorial Day weekend. As if channeling the “Little Engine that Could,” the historic railway started right where it left off last year with overwhelming public support. After a sold-out season in 2009, the V&T has expanded operations to Friday through Sunday rides, now through Oct. 31.
The strong beginning to the V&T’s summer operations has tourism officials hopeful the trend sticks.

V&T Railroad offers $5 Friday discount

CARSON CITY — In an effort to attract local riders and welcome the opening of the 2010 season, the Virginia & Truckee Railroad is offering $5 off adult tickets on all Friday train rides. The discount is available on adult tickets, May 29 through June 25, providing an affordable, $24 round trip voyage on a vintage diesel train between Carson City and Virginia City.

Carson City railroad history celebrated with arrival of McKeen Motor Car V&T No. 22

CARSON CITY — It was 'all aboard' the historic McKeen Motor Car V&T No. 22 on Sunday for dozens of railroad enthusiasts as the Nevada State Railroad Museum celebrated a milestone 100th anniversary commemorating the iron horse's arrival to the Carson City railroad.

The celebration was at the platform of the historic Wabuska Depot. Numerous local, state and federal officials and noted railroad historians participated in the event, trading stories and history references, and taking turns riding the car.

The Bernhard family, donors of the car, were the honored guests.

Officials to cut ribbon on first-ever Carson River whitewater rafting, kayaking facilities

Carson City and Lyon County officials will cut the ribbon May 22 to ceremonially launch new boating facilities for whitewater rafting and kayaking that have opened on the Carson River Aquatic Trail between Carson City and Dayton.

Ski Patrol races at Squaw Valley

April 16 through April 18, 2010, Squaw Valley is hosting the first ever nation-wide Professional Ski Patrol Olympics. Competitions ranging from simulated bomb throws to a GS race down some of Squaw Valley’s most difficult terrain will take place by the Headwall chairlift on Saturday, April 17 and Sunday, April 18.

NV Energy giving V&T reconstruction commission $100,000 check
