A 23-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday for felony suspicion of domestic battery by strangulation and a misdemeanor violation of a suspended sentence warrant, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

CARSON CITY — After more than a year, visitors to the Nevada State Museum can watch the museum’s historic Coin Press No. 1 carry on a mission it started nearly 150 year ago in the very same building.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City will conclude its 33rd year of Santa Train this Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 16-17.

A Carson City Christmas tradition for more than three decades, the annual Santa Train has hit full steam at the Nevada State Railroad Museum (NSRM), located at 2180 South Carson Street.

The Carson City area is awash in entertainment, shopping, and family-friendly options this weekend. Santa Claus is popping up all over, including at Benson Feed for the annual CASI Pet Photos with St. Nick and aboard the train at our Railroad Museum’s Santa Train. Spend the day at the Silver Saddle Ranch: their annual Holiday Open House is the perfect time to explore their trails and learn more about the working ranch’s preservation.

Carson City Fire Department has sent one engine staffed with 4 personnel to the Thomas Fire burning out of control in southern California, said Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon. Engines from East Fork, Central Lyon County and Tahoe Douglas are among 12 regional agencies that make up three strike teams that are sending personnel to the fire.

Elsewhere, let the arrows fly during the Clearcreek Bowmen’s Holiday with a Hero fundraising 3-D shoot. Enjoy a Small Town Christmas in Dayton this evening. The festivities take place in ‘Our Park,’ at the western edge of town. An ugly sweater contest, hot chocolate, caroling, tree lighting and home-town fun are on the menu. New this year is Museum Store Sunday with both the Nevada State Museum and the Nevada State Railroad Museum participating. A 35-year-old man was arrested Saturday for suspicion of felony home invasion after allegedly breaking into a home and helping himself to food in the kitchen, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

With Thanksgiving just days away, the holiday season is just around the corner. The annual Holiday Craft Fair at Carson High features a plethora of handmade and locally crafted gifts for the loved ones on your shopping list. Take the plunge at the Carson Aquatic Center if you want to get a picture with Scuba Santa. Grab a coat, some friends, and your ID and head downtown for this month’s beer crawl. $15 gets you a glass and your first beer, from there you’ll pay only $1 for refills at several watering holes. The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City has set the dates for its 33rd year of Santa Train and for the second consecutive year, it will be offering special free Santa Trains exclusively for children battling cancer.

Along with a High Wind Warning issued earlier, a moderate to strong atmospheric river will bring significant precipitation to the region prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Flood Watch for Carson City, Carson Valley and much of Western Nevada.

The smoke and haze visible Thursday around Lake Tahoe is from prescribed fire operations on the Eldorado National Forest and the Tahoe National Forest Truckee Ranger District.

Though the level of library support varies throughout school districts in Nevada, the Carson City School District highly values school libraries as it promotes literacy through funding, a full-time library staff at each school, and certified teacher-librarians at CHS and the middle schools.

Many amazing opportunities are going on in the CHS school library. The CHS Library is piloting the Nevada Teacher-Librarian Evaluation framework and transitioning from a “library” to a collaborative learning commons. 

It’s that time again. The Battle Born state celebrates its admission to the United States on the last Friday of October, with the annual Nevada Day parade on Saturday. New this year is a ‘Passport to Downtown’ event on Friday. Also new this year is the one-night-only curated art show, Capital Collage, on Friday night featuring over 20 diverse artists and organizations.

The Nevada State Museum and the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City are offering free admission to patrons both Friday and Saturday in recognition of Nevada Day.

The Nevada Department of Veterans Services is pleased to announce Director Kat Miller has been selected to serve as Grand Marshal in the 2017 City of Reno Veterans Day Parade. Brigadier General Zachary Doser has been chosen to serve as Deputy Grand Marshal in the November 11th event honoring veterans and those currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.
