The Carson City Visitors Bureau is using the latest in new technology to highlight some of the city’s oldest buildings.

The iconic Blue Line Trail — which features notable homes on the historic west side — is now available on the Visit Carson City app.

There’s a riot at Mills Park. Don’t worry, this isn’t the kind of riot you want to avoid: the Rockabilly Riot has roared into town and offers rad cars, drag races, live music, a burlesque show and tattoo expo. Intermingled with the pompadours and pin-up girls are hundreds of law enforcement officers in town to show off their skills at the Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge. Tonight you’ll have to choose where you go for free music: the street dance at Jimmy G’s, Gold Dust West, Westside Pour House, the Fandango, Nugget, or Max Casino.

The Carson City Arts & Culture Coalition will install its Focus on Carson photography banner on the Hop & Mae Adams Foundation construction site fence at Curry and Telegraph streets this Wednesday, June 22, at 10:30 a.m.

The banner displays 20 photographs taken in Carson City by local artists. The public is invited to attend and help hang the banner.

Happy Fathers’ Day Carson City. The Reno Rodeo is a great way to spend the day with your progeny. The Pow Wow continues at the Stewart Indian School, and Epic Rides is still downtown. Enjoy an afternoon at the golf course: a free family golf clinic is at Eagle Valley. Head to Heritage Park in Gardnerville for a car show celebrating the Great Race.

Planes, trains, and bicycles are the theme of this Fathers’ Day weekend. Epic Rides has taken over downtown with booths, bikes, beer, music, and more. The Carson City Airport is hosting their annual Fly-in and Open house, complete with hot air balloon rides. World War II aviation buffs won’t want to miss the Wings of Freedom tour at the Minden Airport. Steampunk meets Steam trains at the Nevada Railroad Museum. SATURDAY:

It's Friday, Carson City. Epic Rides descends on our valley, and I must say, it is one epic event. Beware that quite a few of our downtown streets will be closed and there will be bikes everywhere. Live music can be found at a stage on Musser Street, the Brewery Arts Center, and most all of our casinos. A huge welcome goes out to those in town for the Annual Pow Wow at Stewart Indian School. Don't forget that Fathers' Day is Sunday: plenty of our local shops have something just perfect for the man in your life.

FRIDAY:

Keep an eye out for cyclists, Carson City. Bike to work week has begun, so please slow down and share the road. You’ll find a new exhibit in the CCAI Gallery at the courthouse, so check it out after you cast your early vote in the primary. The Sacred Arts of Tibet Tour has brought the monks of the Gaden Shartse Phukhang Monastery back to the Brewery Arts Center; today they’ll perform a tea offering and give a presentation on happiness. Negroni week kicks off today at the Firkin and Fox, but several local bars are participating in this fundraiser.

The Nevada State Fair returns to Carson City Thursday, June 9 and will occupy Mills Park until Sunday, June 12. Free to attend, the Fair features live music, carnival rides, a car show, County exhibits, civil war reenactments, and more. Free parking can be found at Carson High School.

Tibetan monks from the Gaden Shartse Monastery are on a two-year tour and will be visiting the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City and Minden's O2 Wellness & Yoga Studio to share their unique and deeply spiritual culture of Tibetan Buddhism.

The 2016 Virginia & Truckee Railroad season chugs full steam ahead starting Memorial Day weekend, May 28-29. Spring is in the air, and the Sierra Lutheran Theater Department has chosen two comedic takes on classic fairytales to celebrate.

On April 14th and 15th, the SLHS Theater Department will host their Spring Production, featuring two short plays, The Three Bully Goats Griff and The Mad Tea Party.

This beautiful weather is no April Fool’s joke, so get out and enjoy the sunshine. Ascent Runs begins their half marathon series today with a race through Carson Canyons, and it is sure to get your heart pumping. The Downtown Business Association wants to see you at today’s wine walk. Once you’re around Telegraph Street, you’ll see some throwbacks from a by-gone era courtesy of Naughty Tea Mistresses, the First Nevada Cavalry, and more.

The Downtown Business Association’s wine walk has always been rain, snow, or shine. Now they can add construction to the list of things that won’t get in the way of this fun monthly event. Saturday, April 2, go see for yourself what new things are breaking ground in the downtown corridor and enjoy some wine, nibbles, and entertainment while you’re there.

My friend Monique asked me to write about shrubs that attract birds. A bird-friendly habitat requires food, water and shelter. Food consists of sap, nectar, pollen, seeds, nuts, berries or fruits. Shrubs should be dense enough to support nests, but also allow birds to move about to escape predators.

It’s Presidents Day weekend with a Valentine’s Day cherry on top. There is still time for some shopping if you’re looking for something for your special someone. Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery hosts its annual Champagne and Jewelry party Saturday and offers some amazing hand-crafted bling for your sweetheart. Carson Mall is another great bet for last minute gifts. Several crafters, vendors, and shops make it easy to find something unique. The annual Feast of Chocolate returns to the Plaza Event Center; raising funds for scholarships has never tasted so good.

Haley, an AmeriCorps intern at The Greenhouse Project at Carson High School in Carson City, introduced me to Bokashi composting recently. It is an anaerobic (absence of free oxygen) form of composting, using fermentation to decompose kitchen waste.

This weekend is your last opportunity to experience Carson City Historical Society's "Teapots and Such" exhibit. Creamers, sugar bowls, and other tea accessories are on display. Teapots for this exhibit are different from those shown last July.

Can we compost in winter? Winter composting may simply involve tossing ingredients on the pile and waiting for temperatures to warm up in spring to complete the decomposition process.

On the other hand, if you maintain a warm temperature in the interior of the pile, you can keep the decomposing microbes happy and somewhat active. With a warm center, the cold exterior temperature of the pile won’t harm them.

With a theme that takes aim at the future — creating the community you want to live in — TEDx Carson City is an all-day event where speakers from a variety of disciplines share their life's work, passions and concepts through thought-provoking and entertaining talks that run between 10 to 15 minutes.

It’s the first weekend of the year, and so it’s time for the downtown wine walk. The monthly tradition is a great way to meet others from around town. Kids will want to head to the Community Center for the Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot. The best shooters in the state will advance to the national competition in Chicago for a chance at scholarship money.

In a remarkable interfaith gesture, various religions are getting together in Reno to celebrate the ringing in of the New Year in a unique and divine manner away from the glitter of the casinos.

Coordinated by religious statesman Rajan Zed, “Multi-faith New Years’ Eve Service” hosted by Reno Buddhist Center (RBC) will include Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Baha’i, Shinto and Native American prayers.

Celebrate New Year’s Day 2016 with Nevada State Parks. Guided hikes led by park rangers and local volunteers will be offered at State Parks throughout Nevada as part of the nationwide First Day Hikes Program. Nevada State Parks is waiving entrance fees for all first day hikers.
