The public will have a chance to learn about sustainable landscaping in Lake Tahoe at the 8th Annual Conservation Landscape Tour on August 19. The tour will begin at the Lake Tahoe Community College Demonstration Garden and continue down Pioneer Trail towards Meyers Station.

The story of one of the most rugged and resilient Nevada families, as told by one of the state’s most enduring journalists comes to the Nevada State Museum, Carson City Thursday, August 13 as photojournalist Jeff Scheid premieres a one-year exhibit, “Ranching in the High Desert: Five Generations, One Family.”

The exhibit text and labels that explain Scheid’s photos are written by Jennifer Robison. The exhibit debuts in the museum’s South Changing Gallery with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. that is free and open to the public.

History shows time and time again our greatest accomplishments at Lake Tahoe are achieved when people work together. In the past, Tahoe was known as a place where unproductive interactions between stakeholders led to a stunning decay in our environment and our economic vitality, creating a region that seemed frozen in time.

If Wednesday night’s Concert under the Stars in Carson City with Ambrosia and Pablo Cruise was anything else other than a spectacular rock and roll fundraiser for the Greenhouse Project, it was also where new and old friends came together from places far and wide to celebrate.

The Tahoe Resource Conservation District in partnership with the South Tahoe Public Utility District is hosting FREE Tahoe Friendly Landscaping trainings for the month of July.

This time last year, Lake Tahoe made headlines around the world for an embarrassing amount of trash left on the beaches after the Fourth of July festivities. To prevent that from happening again, the community is rolling out a secret weapon: a humorous new campaign that aims to remind folks to take care of the region.

The Nevada Humane Society board of directors have agreed to raise $225,000 for a new animal shelter to be built in Carson City, officials said ahead of Thursday's meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors.

Supervisors will consider additional funding for the proposed new shelter project that is set to replace the current, aging facility. In a news release sent Wednesday, the Humane Society notes the funding gap regarding anticipated costs and said it will raise money to help defray some of the costs.

Muscle Powered's Jeff Potter was honored recently for his work on the Ash Canyon to Kings Trail in Carson City at the National and International Trail Awards, held in Portland, Oregon.

American Trails presents the National and International Trails Awards Program to recognize the tremendous contributions of volunteers, professionals, and other leaders who are working for the betterment of trails both nationally and internationally and in both rural and urban settings. These awards are presented every two years at the International Trails Symposium. The ceremony was held May 19.

The fourth consecutive year of drought in California and Nevada emphasizes the need for communities to become fire adapted. The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team implements forest thinning, prescribed fire and defensible space programs to reduce wildfire risk, but they need the public’s help to create Fire Adapted Communities at Lake Tahoe.

Litter. Dog poop. Unsafe fires. Bear safety. These are just some of the issues impacting our region. Wednesday, the Lake Tahoe Outreach Committee unveiled the Take Care campaign to help reduce these impacts and promote a more responsible use of our great outdoors.

The campaign was designed for use in outreach efforts by public agencies, private businesses and nonprofit organizations in the region. Aimed at residents and visitors, the campaign is a series of reminders that poke fun at the mistakes we all make when we’re not paying attention.

Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. Agencies and organizations have teamed to spread awareness of archaeological and historic preservation efforts throughout the state and encourage both residents and visitors to explore and learn about Nevada’s significant archaeological and historical treasures.

Carson City Events:

The Greenhouse Project, located at Carson High School in Carson City, has entered the Seeds of Change Grant Program for an opportunity to win one of two $20,000, five $10,000 grants or ten $1,000 grants. They are asking the community to vote for their application.

The Grant Program aims to enhance the environmental, economic and social well-being of gardens, farms and communities. The grants will be awarded to organizations that help support sustainable, community-based gardening and farming programs that focus on teaching people about the food they eat and how it’s grown.

The 7th annual Concert Under the Stars, a benefit for the Greenhouse Project, will feature a July 8 double billing with 70's and 80's smooth classic rock powerhouses Ambrosia and Pablo Cruise.

The concert was announced by Cafe at Adele’s owner Charlie Abowd on his Facebook page Saturday. Ticket sales will be announced soon. The show is produced by John Procaccini of Chili Bop Entertainment and will be in the back outside area of Adele's Restaurant and Lounge.

The Tahoe Fund announced Monday the election of Kevin Marshall, Pete Sonntag and Julie Motamedi Teel to its board of directors. The three new members each bring a strong commitment and love of the Lake to their positions.

They are charged with helping the organization expand its impact by growing support of environmental improvement projects that will restore and enhance the Tahoe environment.

Beginning this Friday and continuing through April, the public is invited to spend a day at Lake Tahoe skiing with a U.S. Forest Service ranger at Heavenly Mountain Resort.

Tours begin at the top of the gondola at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. every Monday and Friday through winter. Spanish Ski with a Ranger returns Friday, Feb. 20, with tours offered every Friday at 10:30 a.m. Both programs last about an hour and continue through April 10, 2015, weather permitting.

If you love Tahoe and you love to ski or ride, now is the time to take advantage of the “Plates for Powder” program.

One of my dreams in my professional life was to introduce young people to the viability of a great career in horticulture. I have been fortunate to realize that goal through my involvement with The Greenhouse Project. However, awakening the passion for growing and working with plants in youth is only one wonderful aspect of this project. I also get to work with caring dedicated people, help beautify downtown Carson City and, best of all, help feed those in need.

Never before has such a grand combination of iconic ranch, lakefront and forestland been offered for sale at once in Lake Tahoe’s rich history. This rare offering includes: historic Shakespeare Ranch with 133 acres of lakefront ranchland; Squaw Valley Homestead, arguably the most coveted landholding in Squaw Valley; and High Canyon Ranch, encompassing 321 acres of one of the last remaining privately owned large acreage parcels in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife will hold its annual volunteer sagebrush seed collection on Saturday, Nov. 22 starting at 9 a.m. Even though 2014 was not a big fire year, Northern Nevada has lost millions of acres of wildlife habitat to wildfires in the last few years and seed is still needed for ongoing range rehabilitation efforts.

“When demand is high for seed, the price for a pound of pure live sagebrush seed can be over $50,” said Steve Foree, NDOW habitat biologist. According to Foree, NDOW either has to buy seed or pick it themselves.

The Carson City Greenhouse Project at Carson High School is one of 14 projects in Nevada to receive specialty crop block grant money designed for organizations that promote and enhance speciality crops through education, research, marketing and production, the Nevada Department of Agriculture announced Tuesday.

The $21,577 in grant money earmarked for the Greenhouse Project will help fund the Growing America’s Future Farmer program, said JoAnne Skelly, extension educator with the University of Nevada and grant writer for the Greenhouse Project.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services awarded $150,000 to the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center to create a new, interactive public exhibit at the Tahoe Science Center, located in Incline Village. The exhibit will merge the results of citizen science with TERC’s new, real-time monitoring network that is being installed around the lake to understand and improve the clarity and health of Lake Tahoe’s shoreline.

On Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m., Mr. Whittell will pay a visit to the Gold Hill Hotel from his summer retreat at the Thunderbird Lodge on Lake Tahoe. He will undoubtedly have some stories that include Bill the Lion, his elephant Mingo, surviving World Wars I and II, and his six custom Duesenberg luxury cars.

Whittell is played by Steve Hale in first person and costume. In the Chautauqua you may be the first to hear about his big plans for his 30,000 acre estate and 27 miles of shoreline on the Lake!

Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day is the largest volunteer restoration event in the Tahoe basin. Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are invited to restore trails, stabilize stream banks and plant native plants. Last year 82 volunteers from various organizations participated to help restore Tahoe Paradise Park in Meyers, CA.

Visitors to the Lake Tahoe Summit on Tuesday, August 19 will notice new gateway signs along three Nevada highways leading into the Lake Tahoe Watershed. Installed near Daggett Summit on Nevada State Route 207, Spooner Summit on U.S. Highway 50 and on Nevada State Route 431 the Mount Rose Highway, the decorative gateway signs read, “Entering the Lake Tahoe Watershed — Help Protect It!”

Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell provides an update on the actions taken by the Board of Supervisors at its Thursday, Aug. 7 meeting.

But before that Crowell addresses the success of the NV 150 Fair held at Fuji Park in Carson City earlier this month. He offers thanks to the countless volunteers, 4-H groups, FFA, city employees, as well as the efforts of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce who helped sponsor the event as well as Casino Fandango, which allowed fair participants to park and shuttle to and from the fairgrounds.

The League to Save Lake Tahoe hosted a Stewards of Stormwater event Thursday, Aug. 7 in Incline Village in partnership with Tahoe Family Solutions’ Camp Explore program, IVGID, the Nevada Tahoe Conservation District, and Washoe County, Nevada.

More than 50 kids from Tahoe Family Solutions along with other volunteers helped place 41 metal markers on storm drains that lead to Lake Tahoe and picked up 40 pounds of litter on the streets.

After more than a year plagued with internal problems and public criticism, Carson City Animal Services has entered into a partnership with the Nevada Humane Society in what Carson City Manager Nick Marano calls "a new chapter in animal services in the capital city."

Carson City has reached a conceptual agreement with the Nevada Humane Society, Nevada’s first and most highly regarded animal welfare group, in a new partnership to lead Carson City’s Animal Services, to include adoptions, shelter, and regulation services, said Marano.

There will be free parking and beach access Saturday to Sand Harbor, Cave Rock and Spooner Lake state parks for those who support Lake Tahoe with the purchase of license plates.

“Buying a Tahoe license plate is one of the easiest ways to help the Lake,” said Tahoe Fund CEO Amy Berry. “Thanks to Nevada State Parks, we are able to show our appreciation to Tahoe plate holders with a free day at the beach or park.”

The Tahoe Fund has partnered with Nevada State Parks to offer free access July 12 to Sand Harbor, Cave Rock and Spooner Lake to current owners of Lake Tahoe license plates. The event is designed as a gesture of appreciation to those who support Lake Tahoe with the purchase of license plates.

“We are thankful to the thousands of people who choose to buy and renew their Tahoe license plates,” said Jay Howard of Nevada State Parks. “Our Lake Tahoe parks benefit greatly from those funds, with beach improvements, watershed restoration work, and new hiking trails.”
