Carson City Animal Services and Nevada Humane Society announce partnership
After more than a year plagued with internal problems and public criticism, Carson City Animal Services has entered into a partnership with the Nevada Humane Society in what Carson City Manager Nick Marano calls "a new chapter in animal services in the capital city."
Carson City has reached a conceptual agreement with the Nevada Humane Society, Nevada’s first and most highly regarded animal welfare group, in a new partnership to lead Carson City’s Animal Services, to include adoptions, shelter, and regulation services, said Marano.
The five current full time staff members will be found full time positions within the city, Marano said.
“We are going to find them a position within the city and, if they want to stay with Animal Services, the Humane Society will be happy to interview them as it will be their option in hiring,” he said.
This public/private relationship will enable Carson City to provide its citizens expanded levels of service and further expand Northern Nevada’s leadership position in animal stewardship, said Marano.
"It's a great opportunity for Carson City," said Marano. "The partnership will allow Nevada Humane Society to leverage over 80 years of experience and take Carson City to the next level in animal welfare. It will also make Carson City the second community in Nevada to become no-kill, which is defined as a shelter that does not euthanize animals for time or space."
A no-kill shelter saves more than 90 percent of the animals that arrive; only euthanizing animals that have no quality of life or that are considered dangerous. Nevada Humane Society has followed this mission since 2006, saving nearly 70,000 lives, and is proud to be given the opportunity to create the same successes in Carson City, he said.
