A press conference was held Monday at the Nevada State Legislature in Carson City by Republican Assemblywoman Lisa Krasner and Attorney Gloria Allred regarding Assembly Bill 142, which would eliminate the statute of limitations for the prosecution of sexual assault where there is DNA evidence.

The Douglas County Board of County Commissioners approved the adoption of Resolution 2019R- 011, a resolution informing the 80th (2019) session of the Nevada State Legislature that the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners opposes any state legislation which exceeds federal firearm transfer requirements or infringes on the United States Constitution or Article I, Section 11 of the Constitution of the State of Nevada.

Enjoy the sunny skies while you can as a quick-moving weather system will blow in this afternoon into the evening bringing a chance for gusty winds and scattered rain and light snow showers. From Wednesday onward it looks like plenty of sunshine filled days extending into the weekend.

The Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Jakki Ford will be joined by several poets and readers on Tuesday, March 12 for an evening of big-band music and poetry on the theme "Hang Ups."

Each poem will be followed by a related big-band tune. The event will be at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, across the street from the state legislature building in Carson City. It runs from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Admission is $5 at the door and free for age 18 and under.

CARSON CITY — Week 5 of the Nevada Legislature marks the quarter way point in the 2019 session. Up this week, a prohibition on implanting a microchip in another person and a license plate to support environmental conservation at Lake Tahoe. A bill would mandate an interim study of wildfires. A joint resolution to urge Congress to oppose the expansion of the United States Air Force into the Desert National Wildlife Refuge will be heard. Human trafficking legislation will be considered, and a ticket scalping measure will also be heard.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we want to acknowledge local women who have blazed the trail for today’s women continuing to make a difference in a world once dominated by men. It wasn’t so very long ago men dominated the highest non-elected positions in Carson City government.

The very first act of our new state legislature a couple of weeks ago was to pass S.B. 143, a bill that revived ballot Question One, passed by Nevada voters two and a half years ago but never implemented by former Governor Sandoval.

The Champions for the Arts Advocacy Day will be hosting an event focused on arts advocacy, hosted by Cultural Alliance Nevada.

The event will take place at Carson City’s Nevada State Legislature, located at 401 S. Carson Street, from 8 am to 2 pm, Friday March 15.

CARSON CITY — A slew of interesting bills and presentations are ahead this week. A bill to establish the Stewart Indian School museum is on the move Monday. Also on Monday, lawmakers will consider raising the maximum age of a “runaway or homeless youth” from 18 to 24. A physician assisted suicide bill will be heard Monday afternoon.

It’s big news: female lawmakers now hold 32 of the Nevada state legislature’s 63 seats. Thus, Nevada has the distinction of being the first state in the country to seat a female majority to its legislative assembly.

But, that this momentous occasion has transpired first in Nevada oozes with irony. After all, Nevada is the only state in the country that legally sanctions the buying and selling of women for sex.

The most emblematic measure of women’s true status in any society is reflected in its prostitution laws: are women public sexual commodities under the law or not?

The 2019 Legislative Session is in full-swing, and during week 3 we’ll see numerous, important bills, budget considerations and presentations in committees and around the legislative campus in Carson City.

A perennial measure to implement an automated system of traffic enforcement at select intersections will be heard this week. Lawmakers will hear a measure regarding collective bargaining, the New Nevada Education Funding Plan, Medicaid coverage for donor breast milk, cannabis drug screening for employment, sexual assault screening, a Working Families rally and lobbying day on Monday and much more.

The Carson City Council of the United States Navy League will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019 at the Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino, Carson City.

Our Dinner and Meeting will be held in the Juniper Room this month. The Social hour will start at 5:30 p.m. and Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m.

On Monday, the 80th session of the Nevada State Legislature began with a welcoming snowfall, which is expected to continue until Tuesday morning.

This session marks the first time in U.S. history that state has elected a female-majority legislature after Rochelle Thuy Nguyen and Beatrice Angela Duran were appointed to two open seats in Las Vegas, bringing the total seats held by women to 33 out of 63.

Sue Meuschke, executive director for the Nevada Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence (NCEDSV), was honored today with a proclamation from the office of the governor for her 30 years of service as “a dedicated and talented community leader, collaborator and advocate for survivors” for the State of Nevada, advocating for victims of domestic and sexual violence and increasing awareness of the issues.

Well done and congratulations to music teacher and performing artist Christina Bourne and all of the choir students from Mark Twain Elementary School in Carson City.

Ms. Bourne sang the National Anthem and the student choir sang two songs for Governor Sisolak’s State of the State Address last week at the Nevada State Legislature.

Let me begin by wishing each of you a Happy New Year, and by congratulating you on the successful campaigns you ran.

I know you don’t have a lot of time to settle in before the legislative session begins this month, but I want to share the cry of this mother’s heart as you consider education during the session, specifically keeping the Nevada Opportunity Scholarship program (AB165) as it currently exists..

Worldwide the United States is regarded as the land of opportunity. That is generally true for millions of Americans, but it may not be true much longer in the Battle Born State when it comes to education.

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. English is my second language, so I hope I can share my thoughts okay with you.

I am a mother of five who immigrated to this country 33 years ago because of the opportunity of a better life. The American Dream. My life here with my family has been a dream, and I want my kids to know all the opportunities America offers. The most important opportunity I want them to have is the Nevada Opportunity Scholarship, and the chance for the best education possible.

The Nevada Art Council will be hosting a Grants Workshop in Carson City on Thursday, Jan. 10, to go over the new grant programs for 2020, as well as lessons on how to craft a grant proposal.

On Monday at the Capitol grounds in Carson City, Nevada made several historic firsts for both our state and our country with the inaugurations of members of state government.

Tuesday is Election Day. So far, it appears over 13,000 Carson residents cast their ballots during early elections, with Republicans seeming to be in the majority of early voters. Click here for full numbers.

It has been reported that Nevada brothel owner and Assembly candidate Dennis Hof died in his sleep at the Love Ranch in Pahrump, Nevada, on October 16. Police do not suspect foul play.

CARSON CITY — In a continued commitment to preserve and protect Nevada’s water resources, the Nevada Department of Transportation was approved for termination of its consent decree in the United States Nevada District Court.

Question 4 is on the ballot this year for Nevadans to choose whether or not to include certain medical equipment to the sales tax exemption list, similar to Question 2.

In the upcoming midterm election Nevada voters will be faced a question of tax exemption. If adopted, Question 2 would create a state and local sales tax exemption for feminine hygiene products.
